Is it normal that my 3 yr old thinks a man visits him ?

My son was molested by his father and since had night terrors. They became so bad that he feared sleeping. I tried everything to help the situation. He is in therapy , and his therapist also tries to help him in this area.
All of a sudden he said, "Mom, this man takes my bad dreams away now." He wasn't scared and he described a man with white hair, and he comes to take the bad dreams. He said he wears white, and purple & orange clothes. He said,"He stands at the end of my bed and when I wake up from a bad dream, he takes it away." Anything like this usually would scare him but he seemed very comforted. He said the man's name was Zacsen and he lived far away , but when he has bad dreams he will be back.
As a Mom, things like this kinda freak me out. I am not sure what he is talking about. I am glad he is comforted but just a little scared that he may be hallucinating or something. Please give feedback here:) Thx guys!

Talk to your son's doctor or therapist about this. This isn't something this community is qualified to help you with.

  • I'm sorry such a terrible thing happened to your son. I think maybe through his traumatic experience he is making an "imaginary friend" to help him with his issues. It's the likely reason here, many traumatized children do the same.

That gave me the shivers, but i dont think hes hallucinating, children are very prone to have encounters with spirits

you might think im crazy, but i definately think its your dad or grandfather trying to help him, or even the kids dad's father or grandfather trying to make it right

Hallucinations are not 'extreme'. Seeing dead people is both 'extreme' and almost certainly impossible.

I would hide a camera in the kids room and make sure some freak isn't sneaking in there at night first and foremost! If that's not the case, then I wouldn't worry. He's just coping.

I completely agree with Kaiser88. Children often make imaginary friend to help them cope with their fears and loneliness. You should be happy for that. In some years he will get rid of this imaginary friend. And please don't tell him that his friend is only in his mind. Don't worry:)

Alright now somebody said that your little boy could be schizophrenic... no. Or at least highly, highly, HIGHLY unlikely. In young children, schizophrenia is EXTREMELY rare. it typically does not develop until the person reaches young adulthood. Now that being said, if it runs on your family I would still look out for it. And its typically brought out by trauma. Either way I doubt it.

All that being said, I am not a very religious person, but to be perfectly honest the first thing I thought of was a guardian angel. The name "Zacsen" sounds rather biblical to me. Mt only other guess would be a very vivid imaginary friend, although Zacsen is an odd name and this man seems to have a back story, which seems unusual. I honestly think it is a spirit or your child's guardian angel.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but schizophrenia is completely different than hallucinations.
Anyway, he may be a guardian angel, but he's almost certainly in the boy's imagination. If he's helping the boy, I don't see the harm, but at least telling the therapist would sound like a reasonable idea.

I'm not saying that he definitely is an angel as that's...y'know...unlikely. But you never know.

Anyway you are right to a point. There's five different subtypes of Schizophrenia: Paranoid (which does include auditory hallucinations and or visual delusion), disorganized, catatonic, undifferentiated, and residual. Only if the boy had the paranoid subtype would this really happen.

people telling her that her son is schizophrenic or has developed a multiple personality disorder are just scaring her unnecessarily (@ mom; sorry about talking about you in the 3rd person on your own post). I googled the name and some video game hits came up- Maybe its worth checking out what games he has been playing, and where he may have encountered this Zacsen character.

Not saying that you're wrong, but the boy's only 3. So it seems a little odd that he'd be playing lots of video games.

Yeah, but the name sounds somewhat biblical. Typically, when I think of an imaginary friend, i think of a character created by a child that's about the same age and with a simple name, and virtually no backstory. This "Zacsen" seems to be a little too deep for a child's simple imagination. I'm not very religious but I honestly think it might be something else...

I don't think children's imaginations are simple at all. I would probably burst into flames if I touched a bible right now, and I haven't touched one in years, so I don't really know how biblical or un-biblical the name is. It's certainly interesting though. But it might not be connected to anything, it might just be something the child made up- They do that too; a lot.

I have heard a story like this from someone I knew and it turns out their next door neighbour was sneaking through the kids window in the middle of the night and molesting the kids. Just a thought

I don't think he's hallucinating... I read somewhere that children are sensitive to The "paranormal" and what not. I don't know what to think of this. I'm not really creeped out since this "man" appears to be helping him, but it's odd. He says he lives "far away", is it on this planet or another world? It's possible that he's a extraterrestrial or a sprit. I don't think this is a ghost. You need to ask your son to specify where his "friend" is from.

    • Finally a decent answer.

There is nothing 'Paranormal' everything is normal and is as should be. Our society just uses the term paranormal because not everybody experiences such things so most are unaware. That being said yes, children are much more open to such things and so they often may experience them where adults do not.

I myself have seen ghosts at least a dozen times in my life when I was in my 20's and lived in a house that must have been haunted. I was not the only person who saw them either.

I've also had other 'paranormal' experiences when I was younger involving an almost death accompanied with an out of body experience which I don't need to go into detail about.

With that possibility being said I do believe the name Zacsen turns up in games. At least a quick google search reveals there is a player that goes by the name Zacsen that plays warcraft. I think your son is to young to play warcraft however.

      http://asialadders.battle.net/war3/ladder/w3xp-player-logged-games.aspx?Gateway=Kalimdor&PlayerName=zacsen

SO it could be nothing more than his imagination or own protection mechanism.

I would secretly set up a hidden camera and record what happens when he sleeps.
You can use a night vision camera which sees in the dark.
Don't let him know you're doing this. They have hidden cameras that look like clocks, or whatever.

The next time he tells you this guy came around watch the video and see if he's actually communicating or he just dreamed or imagined it.

Also, if it is something paranormal it's probably just his guardian angel. People usually have more than one but the name sounds like a game reference to me...

OH Yah... almost forgot, LOCK THE FUCKING WINDOWS!

Seriously maybe screw them shut for now or get a cheapo alarm system that goes off if the window is opened.

      ;)

If it's not a spiritual encounter it is probably a coping mechanism, like an imaginary friend. You should research the name Zacsen (it could be spelled differently) and see if anything comes up. I'm interested so I'll see if I can find anything.

He could have developed multiple personalities to help him deal with the molestation, he could just be very in touch with the "other side", or possibly just an imaginary friend. I would watch out for other symptoms of multiple personalty disorder, but other then that I think this normal.

I appreciate all the feedback. I think like most here that this is either a coping strategy or angel/spirit. My mother said he is so scared that he has made up a friend to protect him. I think that may very well be the case. Whatever it is,it is helping the situation and making him feel better & that makes me feel better.

I think its totally scary, but also totally normal. I don't have children of my own, but I have studied child psychology and, on a psychological level, the child may be using this Zacksen character as some form of sublimation for his trauma; and this is a very good thing.

In dealing with it, I wouldn't suggest taking the spiritual approach (just for the sake of practical application), but just for safety I would definitely research the name AND description and see what comes up in mythology, etc. Its known that children see spirits and that is also fine; its a sign of a close connection with their natural spirituality (The thing we all have before we're told that ghosts don't exist, and that Jesus is the only way, etc. etc.) In the case of your son I think its very good that he "sees" this entity. It shows that, although he is dealing with the trauma of the molestation and that he is developing normally. Do not try and discourage him.

Your son did NOT develop multiple personalities or schizophrenia and I don't know where the people suggesting this comes off! I cannot emphasise enough how normal it is. Try getting over the shock and think over what I've said. Talk to the therapist about it and whatever happens, keep providing your son with a safe and stable environment. He will eventually find different ways of dealing with his trauma. He might have trouble in relationships at a later stage, but for him that'll be normal too.

My daughter has seen her dead grandad for the last 2 years. She is now 4yrs old and is still adamant that grandad comes in through her bedroom window with his wings. They sing twinkle little star together etc etc.
Maybe your child is seeing somebody who was close to you in this life but who has now died! Mention it to his therapist though... Xx

No matter what your religious preference, I think his encounters are harmless. I do believe that children are more in touch with the spiritual plane than we could ever imagine. His friend Zacsen could be anything from an angel to just a harmless helpful spirit. I would encourage your son to not be afraid of spirits, but to also be cautious. Just keep an eye on him for any changes at this point.
