Is it normal that my 13-year-old cousin weights over 160 lbs.?

Okay, so my 13-year-old cousin is a super nice girl. She takes care of her dog, Wally, she's addicted to playing video games, and she talks a lot, but I don't mind.

Anyway, there's a problem with her. She will not stop eating. They came over one time and she ate 5 pieces of those cookie cake things, three hot dogs, two bowls of ice cream with peanut butter and hot fudge on top, and two hamburgers. And she annoucned that she weighed over 160 pounds! For a 13 year old! I really worry about her, like she's going to have a heart attack when she grows up. Is this normal?

Damn, it's happening outside the US too? It's been projected recently that half the US population will be obese in 18 years. *shudder* Can you imagine? The reason this nation falls...is because of something silly like obesity. Reminds me of Wall-E....great movie lol

Yup. I was surprised when I got to the UK and saw how many obese people were there. It might have been due to the location in which I stayed. SOOOO many fried chicken/pizza places! There was literally a fried chicken/pizza restaurant across the street from another fried chicken/pizza restaurant, lmao!
Oh man, I really need to check out Wall-E! I've seen bits and pieces and know what you're talking about with the obese, lazy folks lol. I still need to watch the whole thing though :-P The pieces I watched were really great!

The parents have to get this under control. Like sign her up for sports and activeities for weekends and after school so she's being active and not sitting around eating. Like pack healthy lunches. Healthy doesn't mean it has to be boring and gross. The parents need to change the food in the house.
I have a younger sister with the same problem if you want to talk.

i used to eat alot too when i was a kid, but i've never eaten that much in one sitting, you should probably talk to her mother about going to a doctor to get checked out

I am turning 14 this week, about 5'6, and am a C-cup. I am around/a bit over 140lbs and I appear thin with a bit of chub on the arms and belly, some on he thigh. When I say chub I mean like, healthy, but just a bit over, not a little fat, but just... Plushie? I look thin, you know, like really thin, but some parts are just... Hm. Chubby. And I snack a bit after school, I dont eat breakfast or lunch most ofnthe time, you know, so I have to. I don't know. It really depends on those matters. You know, height, thickness of bones, cup size, all that. Anyways, is she fat? If she doesnt stop eating that much she might become so. It would be best to take her to a doctor and get her checked out. She may have one of many eating disorders... She will be a lot healthier in the future if you act now. You could also get her on a diet called the "water diet." It is when you drink one or more glasses of water before you eat ANYTHING. It makes you feel more full and therefore makes you eat less.
    Good luck!

Depends on her natural size. If shes tall and muscular and doesnt look very fat, then its normal.

Well, I've always had a sweet tooth & love a takeaway; and over the past year I've started putting on weight. Thing is, I'm 20, about 6 foot, male and I'm just about 178 pounds...so no, your female cousin isn't at a normal, healthy weight.

Exercise is of course important, but first and foremost she needs to cut back on those calories. That example of what she ate that day is just ridiculous.

I suppose it depends on her height, but a 13-year-old who never stops eating and is on the brink of obesity? I say see what you can do about getting her on a diet, and switch the junk snacks with healthier alternatives. Seeing as she is a teenager, it might be a little more difficult to get her to want this, unless she already feels insecure about her body. And try to get her to go out and be a little active. Even just going for a walk would be helpful.

160 pounds at 5'6" is considered slightly overweight, but far from obese, which would be closer to 200 pounds. This sounds more like curvy.

That's not normal at all! What do her parents think? Is she being bullied or depressed? Something is not right here! She needs to stop eating all that shit and start eating healthy and exercising. Take her to a nutritionist or her main doctor.

I don't think she's being bullied because I love two hours away from her. But in 5th grade she did get called fat because she weighed, like, 130 pounds

It kind of depends on how tall she is and how much muscle she has (muscle weighs more than fat) but if she's chunky then she eats way too much. Have her find a hobby, like drawing, playing guitar, or something. My guess is she eats because she's bored or has some kind of depression.

She is eating WAAAAAY too much. My BF's step sister (She's 12) went to the hospital not too long ago and found out she had pancreatitis. I'm not sure if it was due to her diet, I think it was, but I'm sure it didn't help. She visited us a month ago and I saw her sneaking snacks behind her parents back. She had 3 packs of cookies in 10 minutes. You're cousin's addicted to food.

Pancreatitis can make you feel very hungry because your body cant process the food to get all the nutrients it needs, despite apparent weight gain. It's not necessarily an addiction.

Nooooooo! Its not normal, but seems to be becoming the norm. I've started before that people are getting bigger and bigger all the time. Children are no exception. There's a few kids I see every day that are still in middle school who have to be almost 200 pounds. What the hell are parents doing???!!! Nothing, obviously. Its like the computer is the new babysitter. Sit here all day, get snacks every half hour, don't go outside, don't excercise, ..... It just sickens me to no end. I know food is delicious, but jesus christ! Have some self control and teach kids the same! How about an apple instead of that tub of ice cream?? How about some oatmeal instead of that 1000 calorie mega meal for breakfast??? Its like a form of abuse or neclect in my eyes. To let a young child destroy their body, their health, shove whatever they want down their throat. I have to stop, this is a subject that enrages me and I could vent all day about it. That poor kid needs a positive, healthy role model to get her ass in gear and do something about her weight while she's still young.

There are so many reasons a child could be over weight. The fact is this person never specified the height or bone structure of the girl so she may actually not be overweight if she happens to be like some of the 6 foot 13 year olds I know.

Emotional eating for reasons that may not have basis in the home could be another, like being bullied at school. Of course there is also abuse and neglect is also possible but it's not the only reason.

If she has an underactive thyroid, or other medical conditions it could cause that as could a whole host of medications, like psych meds or steroids for asthma that she may need to survive. Those meds or medical conditions could make her feel like shes starving all the time. It is not something in her control.

Before you just assume overweight children are always caused by neglectful parents, please look at the whole picture and empathize.

I understand all that, and I have plenty of empathy. I did write that comment before other comments were made that specified her height and all that. It was also said that her parents let her have whatever she wants. I should probably refrain from commenting on weight polls because I get so aggravated. And I'm also so sick of every damn thing getting a label on it. Why does every bad habit have to get turned into a medical condition. Everyone has certain topics that really piss them off, this is one of mine.

Thats not normal. Of course it depends on her size and when her puberty started. But still thats a lot, like, 60 pounds more than me.

Aside from modern culture and extreme availability of foodstuffs, theres ALSO a medical condition in which you simply never feel that your hunger has been satisfied. That is, the chemical signal for "It's enough now" doesn't work, at all...for normal humans it's still delayed by 15-20 minutes, but for some, it's simply non-existant at all.

Also, maybe try and be more careful about WHAT she gets to eat?
Cookie Cakes, Hot Dogs, Ice Cream, Peanut Butter, Hot Fudge, Hamburgers.
Thats all junky or sweet food. Of course children dig that. I would dig that. Especially if i wouldn't get that at home.
See if she also doesn't stop eating if theres vegetables, soup, salad and fruits. Apples and oranges are also "sweet" if she wants a snack. Really, if you know she's doing wrong, don't enable her to.

I've tried, but when she eats it, she doesn't finish it. They live north of us, which takes us two hours to drive there. All I see in their cabinets are chips, cookies, and all this other junk stuff. I'm 12 years old and I'm kind of chunky myself and I've been eating right and excersising (sorry for misspell) and i've lost 3 pounds so far. I'm really worried about her.

So when there's healthy food, she doesn't finish it?

And when there's junk stuff, she digs in?

Well, to me, that solution would sound obvious. Limit access to junk stuff and focus on healthy food stuffs.

I didn't realize you're actually a younger cousin, but it doesn't sound like you can do much here...

In most family households, there's one person responsible for most of the meals and shopping, and if that person does not intend to change things for your cousins wellbeing/health, there's little you can do i'm afraid.

Except caring about yourself, which you already do! Keep it up with eating right, and the excersising(i don't know how to spell it proper either-), and remember, some junk now and then is fine ^_^ as long as it doesn't get out of hand.

So what you're telling me is that you were fat. Why is it ok to preach to drug addicts when you're killing yourself just as much. Being obese is the only problem that you don't need anything to solve. Just cut your meals in half. So you're stomach might hurt a bit. Big deal.If you're fat it's no ones fault but yours

Which is why she shouldn't be fat. It's not like I'm saying it to her face. She's never gonna read this. She's gonna get bullied for being fat like crazy in the next couple years. If it's to the point that you're asking the internet about it than it's obviously a problem. I'm trying to help you. In my experience; if you start to work out as a young teen you start to like working out. It makes you feel great after and it's an age where you can do a workout and it's not gonna feel like you're dying half way through it. Almost everyone who waits however tends to hate it. It's a part of life you gotta introduce to your kids not have them turn to because of necessity 10 years down the road. Her weight is not ok. If she was healthy she would feel better, live longer and look better as well. If kids are fat it's typically because of the habits they're shown at a young age by their parents. What I'm saying is don't make your daughter go on a jog; you go on that jog too. Make it a part of your life. Obesity is still a problem because people spend too much damn time talking about it. There's only one solution and it's never gonna change
