Is it normal that most bad things happen to good people?

Bad things seem to happen more to good people, while "bad" people almost always get away with everything. By Bad People I mean selfish, greedy, callous, and any other adjective you want to use. It's unfair.

In my experience, this is not true.

Well, what I am saying is that, apparently, for me, it's always the "good" who get the worst part.

It's only perception. If you were to ask one of these bad people you thought got some good they didn't deserve, I bet they could give you a list of bad things that have happened to them.

If good things happened to good people, everyone would decide to be a good person. If everyone was a good person then good things would happen to everyone.

That's not true at all, but as Dappled said, injustice is recognized by far and wide much more than the otherwise.

Bad things happen to everyone and for some more than others, not just "good people" or "bad people", both terms I believe are dangerous to label people as they are far too simplistic.

However, I do hate seeing bad things happen to good people, but we all have differing definitions of good. Some of the good people I know have bad things happen to them as a result of their poor judgement, and some of them are good people probably because they know and are familiar with hardship whilst many just have bad fortune.

Ok, so you say bad things happening is result of bad judgement, so in other words, it may be that good people are more innocent and naive, so they might trust others and the good in others more, when they shouldn't, so they get screwed more often.

That's part of what I mean. Poor judgement as in they didn't look out for their own best interests and allowed others in their lives who weren't looking out for their best interests, or people who made mistakes (having unprotected sex while drunk or getting into debt through poor spending habits) because they weren't thinking about the long term consequences of their actions.

Often good people don't think far ahead or they don't have the intellectual tools necessary to make the right decision. Their judgement gets them into trouble. Nobody is perfect, and sometimes even good people run out of luck.

I think it's one of those human things where you notice something more often because it's unexpected or unfair. They still go on in this country about a man who'd been in prison and then won the lottery. I mean, yeah, okay, but what about the thousands of lottery winners who were "good" people? He's just one person and yet he's seen as evidence for something that isn't true.

I just think there is something bad in being good. What other explanation for most bad things happening to good people? They are probably more sentimental or weaker or more stupid, or I don't know.

Yes, but you can't argue against something by just repeating your thesis, i.e.

        Me: Cats are dogs
You: Of course cats aren't dogs
Me: Well how else can you explain why cats are dogs?

I know that's reductio ad absurdum, but you see the point.

Can you give us some evidence for bad things happening to good people other than you just thinking it?

Do you have statistical evidence that bad things happen to good people more often than bad people, or is this just based on your ~feelings~?

Not my feelings, but just common observation.

It's hard to make generalizations like that, but I can see what you mean. Our criminal justice system provides a shining example of that.

If a man robs a bank because he's desperate to feed his children, he is thrown in jail.

If a man embezzles hundreds of thousands of dollars from innocent taxpayers, he makes it to the cover of a Fortune 500 magazine.

Exactly, good example. It is not enough to be good or have good intentions, if you are not wise and cunning, no matter how many good works you do or how kind and empathic you are, you are going to get screwed by life or by other people.

That is simply because we still live in a class based society. the rich stay rich and the poor get poorer. you have your top dogs that will stay on top because no one can get them down, the ones in the middle that can waiver either way, and the ones on the bottom that are too busy being stepped on to even try and stand up.

I agree. I don't think it is just an illusion that most bad things happen to good innocent people. Although I know a lot of bad people who are poor. But what is really sick is the system and the politicians, and the rich who perpetuate the system.

And of course, the people with the most power and influence are seated very comfortable at or near the top, thus wanting the system to remain the same. While the people, who should have the power, are too busy trying to make ends meet to even *think* about resisting the system that keeps them enslaved.

Maybe good people just have a different perspective on events. I do see where you are coming from though.

The amount of times i have seen decent good hardworking people "shit" on by others .. Far outweighs any examples bad things happening to the person inflicting their problems.

I find this to be somewhat true .. I even recentley had dealings with a lawyer who said he found in his line of work that "it's often that the cleanest wheel .. gets the most grease" .. so , i guess i'm not alone on this thought ! Plus i have personally seen many examples of this throughout my life

  • It's 50-50. But bad people have an advantage in life, you can get alot if you're willing to step on everyone to get it.

  • I 100 percent agree with this story creator.

  • The world and all the misfortunes that occur within it can be traced back to ignorance. The good man and the bad man suffer equally where both are ignorant of what to do in any given situation.

Misfortune strikes at everyone equally but only the very shrewd can bare that assault.

Chuck Norris is the reason bad things happen to good people

simply put, things happen to people. if you are a person, things are bound to happen to you and it pretty much has to be either a good thing or a bad thing. there is no coding in the universe that decides what type of thing will happen to what type of person. Think about jail. If most good things were happening to bad people, I doubt prisons would be so full. Now think about Columbine. Do you think all of the kids murdered or injured that day were total dicks? Chances are at least half of those kids did not deserve that, but it happened anyway because that's the way our world works. Science, man.

Ok probability. But I think somehow, good people are more prone to having shit happening to them because they are more carefree and trusting. They usually don't get very ahead in life in terms of economic position because they were not corrupt or they did not step on no one else.
