Is it normal that men do this to me often?

I find whenever I am out talking to men, I constantly get "rated". I don't know if this is a new or common thing to do to women, but I find it really odd... I, myself, have rated guys from a distance, or in retrospect. "Oh, he's a 10." for example. But, in everyday conversation or even when going out, I would refrain from going up to a guy and telling him he is a "10" or a "8.5", or whatever.

Don't get me wrong. It's flattering. The common number I get is in the 8.5-10 range.

I am just curious as to whether its is normal for men to do this directly to women they are interested in, and whether they expect it to be flattering or not.

    I have an ex-friend who used to knock a girl's confidence by getting her alone and saying things like, "Well, your legs are a two, and your boobs I'm only giving a one" because he thought that girls had to be made to feel awful about themselves to have sex with him. Horrible bastard.

      That's a thing, and it's called "negging". It's big in the pick-up artist community. Usually it's more subtle and underhanded than that, though, which is meant to catch a woman off her guard, lower her self-worth (or make her feel self-conscious), and make her think you don't want to have sex with her. Sometimes they're disguised as playful comments, like interrupting her and saying to her friends, "How do you put up with her?" Others are disguised as compliments, but are actually subtle insults. Here are some other examples:

      • Have you considered being an actress? Shows are always looking for extras.
      • You don’t get out much, do you?
      • You have an interesting figure.
      • Were you fat in high school? Fat girls have great personalities.
      • Your nose wiggles when you talk. Oh, there it goes again!

      There are loads more on PUA communities online. And people wonder why I dislike being hit on by strangers.

        I didn't realise there was a term for it. It's horrible. Really horrible. It disturbs me when I see people doing it and being successful. It also disturbs me when I have conversations with men and they say they do it because, even though they're not mean at heart, they say they have to play that part because "that's what women want". Ick!

    Wow! to actually give someone a rating to their face? totally insane. That would be like validating their height or shape of their teeth. it is co-dependent and boundary-breaking.

    I've never told a girl a rating to express how hot I think she is... in fact that's rather lame and unmanly... well, that's what I think in any case.

    If he gives you a 10, he means it as a compliment. If he says anything else, he's probably trying to psych you out. I mean, 8.5 is beautiful, but if a guy is trying to hit on an 8.5, he'll call her a 10, unless he's gaming her.

    What's with the numbers system, anyways .....it's silly how serious this is being taken. The only guy who blatantly disrespected me to my face was the old Mexican neighbor I used to have. He wanted (and constantly bugged me) to bone every girl I had over once he knew I was taken. He complimented my toe nails during our very first conversation. His eyes reminded me of a starving, ravenous wolf. *Shudders* Anywho, I think it's odd and rude to "rate" people straight in the face...but then again, what is your age bracket OP? Eh. Odd no matter what. Or at least super fucking shallow.

    I have 2 scales for girls. The first is looks and the second is personality. It's more of a like/dislike and "would sleep with"/"wouldn't sleep with" sort of thing though.

    I certainly wouldn't go up to a girl I don't know and rate her :/
    I'm far too shy for such behaviour :P

    I dont get why it shouldnt be ns long as its not harrasement :/ i know alot of people who do it but to girls that dont mind it...guys just know when its ok and when its against the law of the country you live in

    I do it with everyone, not to their faces, though, would be disrespectful.
    I have had it donw to me aswell, and I get a score beween 8.5 to 9.5, which is flattering. I got a 7 once, though. Perfect streak failed.
