Is it normal that it seems okay to say "whitey" and not "blackey"??

We (the general public) discourage it when people use certain words tagged as "racist" against black people. Like: "nigger", "blackey", "negro", etc, etc, etc....

But it's PERFECTLY FINE when we say "racist" words that target white people like: "wigger", "cracker", "whitey", etc, etc, etc...

Fact: The word "nigger" comes from the Latin word "niger" meaning "black". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigger

Fact: The word "cracker" (as used in slang) is the name that the slaves gave to the ones who cracked the bull-whips. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cracker_(pejorative)

Given this information, "cracker" actually sounds MORE derogatory than "nigger" is!!

Comments: So WHY are black-derogatory words BAD and white-derogatory words are NOT???

Because words like "cracker" and "honkey" don't have centuries of violence and oppression behind them.

    • That's nice. Now can you explain why racism is considered acceptable when directed at Whites, but not when it's directed at any other groups?

Because of white privilege. In a society where white people don't have privilege, it would be different. If you don't know what I'm talking about, look up white privilege.

Uh, yes we do. I'm from the US, I'm white, and I absolutely do have white privilege. When I say "white privilege", I'm talking about all the things that white people take for granted that other races often don't get. It's not something to feel guilty for having (people don't ask to have privilege), it's just something to be aware of. Here are a few examples of the way white privilege has benefited me:

            • As a child, it was easy for me to find toys and role models of almost any profession, both real celebrities and fictional characters, of my race.
            • If I'm pulled over while driving, I know it wasn't because of my race.
            • On average, white people are paid more than people of colour.
            • I don't have to worry about facing hate crime because of my race (well, I might because of my Hebrew heritage, but not because I'm white).
            • Conventional beauty standards are primarily based on features of people of my race.
            • If I do poorly at something, it won't be seen as a black mark against my entire race.
            • All required history classes I took in public school were centred around people of my race and people who I descended from.
            • I can talk about race and racism without being accused of being self-centred or having a "victim complex".
            • Strangers never ask me if they can touch my hair.
            • I'm not expected to chemically alter my hair in order to appear professional.
            • If I'm poor or wear second hand clothes, this will not be seen as a reflection of my race.

I hope that clarifies things a bit. I can give you more examples, if you like.

            • Okay, let's see here.....

"As a child, it was easy for me to find toys and role models of almost any profession, both real celebrities and fictional characters, of my race."
Let me guess: you're from a majority-White area? If that's the case, what the hell do you expect?

"If I'm pulled over while driving, I know it wasn't because of my race."
              How? Why?

"On average, white people are paid more than people of colour."
Really? Have you ever heard of affirmative action?

"I don't have to worry about facing hate crime because of my race."
100% bullshit. You never hear about anti-White hate crimes; that doesn't mean they don't happen.

"Conventional beauty standards are primarily based on features of people of my race."
Which is why White kids are taught that fair skin is 'ugly' and 'unhealthy.'

"If I do poorly at something, it won't be seen as a black mark against my entire race."
              Your point being?

"All required history classes I took in public school were centred around people of my race and people who I descended from."
Yes, history classes that teach White guilt.

"I can talk about race and racism without being accused of being self-centred or having a "victim complex"."
No, you'll just be accused of being a racist.

"Strangers never ask me if they can touch my hair."
              Irrelevant.

"I'm not expected to chemically alter my hair in order to appear professional."
Not sure what to make of this one.

"If I'm poor or wear second hand clothes, this will not be seen as a reflection of my race."
Not any more or less than people of other races, I would assume.

            • "• As a child, it was easy for me to find toys and role models of almost any profession, both real celebrities and fictional characters, of my race."

You mean like Conterstrike, Nikki Wood, Plexus, Wolf Ferrel, Ren Dog, Sistah Spooky, Amanda Blake Waller, Markus Clay, Jackson Hyde, Wayne Williams, David Zivambe, Black Eagle, Charlie Bullok....well, you get the Idea.

"• If I'm pulled over while driving, I know it wasn't because of my race."

Last time I got pulled over it was by a black cop, so yes it could have been because of my race.

"• On average, white people are paid more than people of colour."

That is completely un-true. Show your facts.

"• I don't have to worry about facing hate crime because of my race (well, I might because of my Hebrew heritage, but not because I'm white)."

Funny, I'm pretty sure when I got robbed at knife point in Detroit and the black guys were screaming "cracker" that qualifies as a hate crime. Or when one of my friends got almost beaten to death for being white...

"• Conventional beauty standards are primarily based on features of people of my race."

White people and people of a lighter skin complection have always been considered more attractive. This is a fact in many culture, but hey you know that old saying. "Don't hate us because we are beautiful".

"• If I do poorly at something, it won't be seen as a black mark against my entire race."

So, your saying there are no white stereo types? Seriously?

"• All required history classes I took in public school were centred around people of my race and people who I descended from."

Well then you had a shitty school. That's not "white privilege". I learned about Montezuma, Musashi, The north African warrior tribes and when it came to my race is was all "White caused slavery and NAZIS!" I'd say the blacks have the privilege when it it comes to education, seeing as how they get grants and funds just because they are black.

"• I can talk about race and racism without being accused of being self-centred or having a "victim complex"."

Blacks do have a victim complex, just like Jews. Can't learn about any of their culture with out "slavery" or the "holocaust" trown in for dramatic effect.

"• Strangers never ask me if they can touch my hair."

I have never once seen anyone ask to touch a black persons hair. Again that has nothing to do with your magical "white privilege".

"• I'm not expected to chemically alter my hair in order to appear professional."

Again, I have never once seen this happen in my life. You're lying.

"• If I'm poor or wear second hand clothes, this will not be seen as a reflection of my race."

Didn't realized FuBu, Tommy Hillfigger, and Echo were second hand.

All of the reason above are why you are a moron. There is no such thing as white privilege, not here in 2012. I have worked extremely hard for all that I have and my race has never given me the upper hand. My brain has. I'm very proud of my race and heritage, but you saying all whites have a hand up make YOU the racist.

          • Yes, White Privilege does exist in America.

It could just be that you are unfamiliar with the term or you are uncertain of the true meaning of it in a sociological context.

White privilege is the up-side of discrimination; racism is the down-side. Most white people are extraordinarily ignorant about the amount of social/political power they actually have compared with subdominate groups (visible minorities) that are citizens residing in the same country as them. They do not recognize it because they believe that they are "normal," not powerful.

A person does not need to be a White Supremacist in order to be ignorant about White privilege. It's only ignorance of the everyday realities of people who are different from yourself that sets the stage for privilege.

In our American society, there is an imaginary line of social justice. Below this line; people are suppressed, discouraged, tortured, etc. Above the line; people are encouraged, respected, awarded with power and given the benefit of the doubt. Any of these things can influence the direction of our lives or our roles in society.

White privilege is similar to male privilege, or heterosexual privilege, or in some cases Christian privilege (Christonormativity). It even has similarities to the naturalized inequality of parent/child or teacher/child relationships - it is normally believed that children should have very little agency in making decisions about their lives.

All people experience disadvantages and advantages in their life by virtue of their gender, class, skin-colour, etc.

What is one way you have had unearned disadvantage in your life?

What is one way you have unearned advantage?

You have to understand your own multitude of places above or below that hypothetical line of justice, in order to understand that it exists and others might have it a lot worse than you simply because they are non-white. People in any group, dominant or subdominant, never created the systems of unearned advantage/disadvantage, but to deny that White privilege exists is to encourage racism on a subverted level. It is our ethos that lets us deny that we live in systems of privilege and oppression.

White privilege is a "slumber of complacency." (Deutch)

Yes, I will admit that I *was* (past tense) ignorant of the term until this conversation, but after a little bit of honest research I've come to a conclusion.

White privilege is fabricated, just as racism is fabricated. They are just two ends of a made-up spectrum.

Yes, there is an imaginary line of social injustice. I happen to be below the line for at least one reason: I'm poor.

("But you have internet! And a refrigerator!" And I work my ASS off to be connected to the outside world and preserve my lunch-meats... thank you very much.)

The other privileges you described (male, straight, Christian) are also fabricated. Just because there are some folks out there try and suppress these people doesn't mean they have to take it.

So you're basically trying to tell me that if I were a white, male, straight, Christian man that I would be perfectly well off in the world because I would then be "special"? There's only one problem with that:

Money. Ever heard the phrase: You have to HAVE money to MAKE money? It's as true as it gets. Not one of you who has supported the theory of white privilege (and yes, it's a theory) have not even once taken into account GREEN PRIVILEGE. Money privilege is probably the only privilege that actually exists and isn't just a theory.

I know and accept that we live in a system that has ones who are privileged and ones who are oppressed... but to slap the word "white" onto that and blame racism is foolish. Racism is HIGHLY looked down upon in the US, it's unacceptable... but only when against minorities.

When a minority is racist against a white person, for whatever reason, it's "perfectly acceptable"... but only because of people like you who believe whites are already "privileged" enough and who allow racism against whites.

I have a culture, too. I have a heritage. My past may be scarred and bloody, but who's isn't? No culture can say their ancestors are entirely innocent, because everyone's past leads to bloodshed and torture somewhere.

Why can't we all just accept that we are all HUMAN? The only "privilege" that truly exists is determined by fate, luck, and money.

              Comment Hidden ( show )
            • You talked a hell of a lot, but you said nothing.

Now again, just what is "White privilege"? I find it very hard to believe it exists, considering that Whites are the only race that's blamed for absolutely everything while simultaneously denied the right to any form of self-preservation. You call that privilege?

It's WHITES who are getting their living space, the societies that THEY built, invaded and trashed.
It's WHITES who are getting beaten, raped and killed while the MSM shamelessly kicks the stories under the rug in the name of political correctness.
It's WHITES who can't ever do something as simple as organize for their collective interests without being relentlessly attacked as "hate-filled racists."

Is any of this sinking in?

This: is a lie. I don't know what honkey means, but the OP is correct in stating that cracker is more offensive than nigger. If someone calls me a cracker that means they're calling me a slave-driver. If someone calls me a nigger they're either joking around or calling me black. No one uses nigger to refer to slaves anymore. Why can't we all just move on? :/

Racial colour blindness doesn't help, though. Look at this study: http://news.illinois.edu/news/10/0421online.html

SlimB can use that word however they like, and they aren't obligated to be offended by anything. I don't think colour blindness is a good solution overall, though.

In my opinion it's never okay to use words like that directed at any race. VioletTrees' comments give loads of reasons why it's seen as acceptable by some people to use those words toward white people and not black people, or at least as not as bad as racism towards blacks by some people though.

I have a black friend and while we were casually hanging out one of her buddy's new girlfriends called her a nigger jokingly. A fight nearly happened. Now let me tell you about my friend. SHE HAS NEVER USED A RACIAL SLUR. SHE HAS NEVER USED WORDS LIKE CRACKER, PAKI, CHINK, OR NIGGER AGAINST ANYONE. BUT SOMEBODY THOUGHT IT WAS OK TO CALL HER A NIGGER. Somebody that thinks just like the OP does.
