Is it normal that instead of looking for jobs i spend my time coding?

My job is crap, it's mundane, repetitive, an untrained monkey could do it. And it's not even permanent, it's agency work, I get paid minimum wage. It bores me to tears.

I'm in my mid 30's and have only ever had one full time permanent job - which I got sacked from after two years.

The rest of my life I've either spent in higher education (art degree, computer studies diplmoa, a-levels) achieving average results, or, I've spent doing agency work.

But instead of doing anything about it, and applying for jobs, I spend all of my spare computer programming (using C in Linux) open source software that people can use for free.

My skills are pretty average, but work experience is well below par.

Is it normal that computer programming is more important to me than finding a job?

Dude, I'm gonna tell you what you already know. You are totally sticking your head in the sand and life is passing you by.

Yes, the economy really, really sucks - but, try giving yourself a 1 or 2 hour time frame each day to devote to job searching. Then it won't be so overwhelming.

It does pass the time and the concentration is great. Programming is very good to do and you can design your own software and be self-employed and sell it. That will stimulate the piss poor economy.

Get a job! About anything.. to get some income flowing in.. then code on the side, for fun.. or possibly for money.

    I so need a job. :(

Making a job out of it isn't a horrible idea, but be warned: you will probably end up disliking the sub-field of programming you do for your job. I've been doing web development for the past few years, and I hate it now. However, I still enjoy programming in general, just not web development.

One who loves his work wouldn't consider it work.

Like Random_man said - make a job out of it.

Amazing, computer programmers are being snatched up for jobs here in WA. My 22 year old bf was offered a job scripting because he was goofing around with C++ at work (he didn't take it though).
Seriously if you spent 2 hours making a resume and posted it on a few sites, people would be calling you. And for $17+ an hour starting too. You should take a few certification tests if you haven't already. Going to work to program would not feel like work at all, you just have to put an hour or two of effort into posting that resume.
