Is it normal that i wish i was a different race?

I'm white but I find myself wishing to be asian or another race (not black, no offense) and it seems that i feel bad being white, thinking of the things that my ancestors may have done to members of other races. Also, people at my school are pretty racist towards white people and say they're fragile, acting black, pale etc. What do you think?

No racism intended.

Ah.. White guilt in full effect.

Every ethnicity has some attachment to ancestors who have done terrible things. EVERY ethnicity. Ultimately, we're all human, but whilst we might have to deal with the repercussions of the past, we can't be held responsible for what people long since dead did to other people.

Similarly, we can't take pride in the achievements of people long since dead. Their actions are not our own.

Of course, you might feel guilty because you feel you are unfairly advantaged still, due to your skin colour. This is more understandable.

However, unless you are creating the advantage, it still isn't your responsibility. It's whoever is maintaining a system of inequality. If that isn't you, you can't be held responsible, and - whilst feeling anger or frustration is sensible - feeling guilty is not.

If people at your school are racist towards you, that's their own irrational prejudice. They are being stupid, and allowing them to influence how you feel about something you cannot change is giving them far too much power.

I've heard of people not liking the race they belong to for the reasons you've mentioned before. I wouldn't say it's incredibly common, but it isn't unheard of. You should be aware, though, that every race has its own issues with discrimination and identity. If you were asian or black, who's to say you wouldn't wish you were white for various other reasons?

Here's hoping you one day feel comfortable with what you are and cannot change. Life's too short.

No, it's not normal but sadly it's very common. Anything your ancestors did has nothing to do with you. You weren't the one who did anything wrong so the people at your school are in the wrong for making you feel like crap and hating yourself. It's stupid to blame and treat someone like dirt when it wasn't their fault. You have nothing to dislike about yourself because your hands and heart are free of blame. Be happy you're White. Here's a note to everyone who hates being White, Black, or whatever: "Think of your ethicity as a gift, not a curse. Every ethicity comes with a rich history and valued members who contributed great things to life or simply were modest, hardworking people. Take pride in your heritage and if possible, preserve it as best as you can."

I'm Caucasian, half American/half Colombian of Spanish, German, Welsh and Scot-Irish decent mostly and I don't see any reason to try to be something else. If my ancestors treated anyone unfairly in the distant past I don't see any reason to fret because I didn't act bigoted toward anyone and that was then and this is now. I don't owe anyone anything and assuming that you've never been bigoted toward other races then neither do you.

I don't think anything good comes from white guilt. Shame about perceived misdeeds in past won't change anything and could eventually cause resentment. Try to love and accept who you are.

  • I don't get white guilt, but I do wish I was another race. Something Asian probably.

I'm not white, so the white guilt part I can't fully understand, but I get what you mean when you say that you sometimes want to be a different race. Usually, I forget that I'm anything other than the race of the people I'm hanging around.

I don't know how normal this is, to want to be another race. But I think having white guilt is pretty common.
