Is it normal that i want to live in the woods?

Okay, here's the deal: I'm sick tired of technology, polluted air, people swarming through the earth, selfishness, narcisistic cunts. I hate human beings and I would like to get away. I also would like to live in nature. Just me and nobody else - peace -, maybe a dog.

  • A lot of people say that, but when push comes to shove, they really can't hack it. But I TOTALLY understand your need to get away from the masses.

My parents were city-hippies (a counter-culture in North America) back in the 1970s, but they bought a 100 acres of land (with a little lake on it) in the middle of the Canadian wilderness. I was 6-months old at the time. There was no electricity because no one had ever lived there. There was no house and the only road was a logging trail. My dad built our house himself, using only the money he had earned over the years; my parents have never had a mortgage. When I was eight years old, my parents bought us electricity (they had to buy a dozen telephone polls, which is expensive). After that, we got a flushing toilet (no more outhouse) - talk about exciting!

They still live there, but today, with my mother's gardens, it is more beautiful than ever. It was stressful for her; raising two babies in a wild place, where her dog was ripped to shreds on the front porch by a mountain lion and seeing bears is an everyday occurrence. She ended up having a stroke when she was only 33 years old. She's happy now, but she sacrificed a lot to get there.

All of their hippie friends from the city did the same thing, yet my parents are the only ones who endured over the past 36 years. Everyone else moved back to the towns and cities after about a decade of "living off the land". I am so proud of my parents.

What you are wishing for may be a lot more difficult than you imagine.

Thoreau? You want to be Thoreau, he was all about that Walden Pond, and stuff like that.

Lots of people want to get away to an oasis, a retreat. There's spas for that. There are resorts for that too. I know, its still got technology. If you really want to go be with nature? Go camping. Its fun. Some go with bare basics, others bring the biggest RV on the planet, lol.

  • Here's an idea: have a movie night, alone. Watch Deliverance, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th and The Evil Dead and then decide if you still want to live all alone in the woods.

    • Ya!
Those kind of creepy people really do exist; sometimes not quite to the extent in the movies, but they're pretty weird anyway. I remember when I was a kid and my parents were telling me that some of the people who lived in the same district as us were not really "normal" because they been marrying their cousins for too many generations. There also seemed to be a lot of young guys getting arrested for diddling their sisters. On the upside; people in the country are less pretentious.

  • Don't end up like Christopher McCandless; learn survival skills first.

I recommend a summer retreat. I grew up in NJ but now live in the Adirondack Mountains of NY and love it. The lifestyle is much more relaxed and my annual salary allows us to live rather comfortably, whereas in an urban area we would struggle to stay afloat.

You should take a vacation. Maybe a nice secluded cabin in the woods.
