Is it normal that i want to become a vegetarian but....

The reason I'm not sure about it is cause I don't know what my family will think and if they'll support me. I like meat (sorta) but I want to try this and I think I can give it up, I'm not obsessed with it. Once I passed by a butcher shop and there were dead sheep hanging OUTSIDE the store and I thought that was mean and cruel and is it normal that I want to be one (a vegetarian, not a dead sheep).

If you can support the life style yes. However I have known of other vegetarian who were hospitalized for this reason. I guess there bodies could not stand going off of meat and they get very sick. So you need to figure out a balanced diet and you need to make sure your body is able to take it. I don't know if I could handle no meat. My diet consists of a lot of protein though.

You'll be craving the sheep later. Trust me I've been to a slaughterhouse and didn't eat meat for about a week. You get over it.

It's perfectly normal. As a warning, you will face much adversity. That is probably the most difficult part. My advice is to always remember that you are doing something wonderful for yourself and for the environment and try to find just one person that will do it with you. Having a vegan buddy is the best! Also, if your family hassles you at all, tell them to read "The China Study" or "Diet for a New America." If those books don't change their minds, they'll at least shut 'em up!!

This post hit home with me and I believe you should do what makes you happy. I say, give it a go and agreed with Dappled, do some research as I see people getting caught out all the time. Especially when you get people who only eat fish and believe crab sticks are made of crab :-S

It's a personal choice and hopefully your family will support you. It sounds like you still live with them and you're worried how this will affect family meals, etc. Bring it up in conversation. Just tell them you are thinking about it. Have a chat. Do some reading up as well, or you'll get caught out by foods that look veggie but aren't. Things like cheese, jelly, beer. All contains bits of dead animals. Unless you get veggie versions.

By the way, it was a dead sheep that first turned me vegetarian. Well, a bit of a dead sheep, anyway.

Vegetarian food can be really tasty contrary to the view that it's boring however I've tried vege burgers and they suck!

  • Yes it's normal. Tell your family and depending on your age and their personalities, they may support you.

Yeah, I'm glad I turned vegetarian, but I had a lot of support since my ma is also a vegetarian.

Maybes you could suggest to them that you would cook your own meals if you would want to, it would probably make them very willing:)

Good advice. I forgot that I offered to do this when I still lived at home. It was popular because everyone wanted to get out of cooking and I enjoyed it anyway.
