Is it normal that i want to be in the military and want to be a poet.

My name is Michael Flowers I am 18yo and still in high school. I live...It doesn't matter where i live. All that matters is that i am a aspiring poet i have been writing poetry for a long time (since the 4th grade) and it is damn close to being a way of life for me. But, at the same time I very much want to be in the military, to be specific i want to join the marines. To be a marine would be a great achievement for me as well and would also be a magnificent career choice. I love poetry and hope one day to be published and i very much so want to be in the military.

Is it normal?

Sure -- do what you love. And it would certainly be challenging to make a living off poetry by itself anyway....

I'm a. Marine stationed at camp Pendleton. Contary to popular belief, marines army dumb jarheads. Some are but vie met some of the smartest cultural people I have ever met here. It's a perfect choice and I really recommend it. Being a poet, some of the best poets were soldiers. War poetry is some of the best as what they describe is very real and heartfelt.

why do you have to choose? write a poem about it :)

but yes it's fairly common to have aspirations that sometimes seem to contradict each other.

Do what you love, mate! You'll never make a living or probably even any money out of poetry, but do it anyway regardless of your career path.

  • My cousins are in the marines and one of them paints. The other one wanted to be a photographer. Totally normal:)

I think you have to choose, or you're art won't be any good. Unless you end up writing from some deep well of regret.

We are you thinking the two are mutually exclusive? There is a long tradition of 'war poets' and as I am assuming you are in the US, you will have plenty of opportunities to practice both
