Is it normal that i want to be a janitor?

I have a job as a principals assistant and am busy all day doing all kinds of tasks with deadlines, and lots of pressure. I'm thinking that being a janitor would be really interesting. You work on your own, mainly at night, and the job requires some labor, but not much in the way of mental capacity, or pressure. Is it normal to at times wish for a downward career instead of forward?

Don't you have to work during the day sometimes? I seem to recall that whenever a kid puked in school, the janitor would dump some type of smelly sawdust or some other powder on top of the puke to soak it up and they would do this shortly after the kid threw up.

I don't think I'd like being a school janitor. Kids are pigs and have little respect for the maintenance crew. I'd prefer an office building where I could work after hours.

But wouldn't you have to clean the bathrooms? I wouldn't want to do that. I used to work at a law firm where some woman used to go dookie on the toilet seat in the women's bathroom! They never did figure out who was doing it, although the gossip was that it was one of the secretaries who did it maybe 10 times before she stopped.

Sure. But I'm not that worried about that. I mainly think waxing floors and vacuuming would be a relaxing time. Of course there would be some negative aspects but I think most office environments are pretty clean. As you said someone notices pretty quickly when someone does something repugnant.

I got a job as a night janitor at a local office building and start tomorrow night! It's from 8pm to 2am so I will keep my normal day job and will still get some sleep between jobs. I can't wait to run the floor polisher!

It's a lot of fun actually. I really like the job and it's really relaxing as I had hoped. I still have my day job so I don't have a lot of down time anymore but I'm happy and enjoying my new custodial career!

Yep, you just want to chill more in life, it's normal.

The janitorial arts require too much energy. Be a night watchman. It's chill.

That's a good idea. I wouldn't mind doing that either. I've been keeping my eyes open for a good opportunity.

Why work at all? A lot of lazy people have learned to live off govt handouts

I'm not lazy. I just want something less stressful. I still plan to earn my way though life. Not be a leech.

Making burgers and putting orders together is rewarding. Why not try that?

I don't think I would like that. My reason for wanting to be a janitor is the solitude and ability to work on my own pretty much on my own schedule. Making burgers seems much to fast paced and demanding for me.

    You're easily pleased.

Honestly, I think this is fine. Just like what Tommythecat said, you just want to chill more. The stress of huge expectations and pressure can be really upsetting, especially when whether those expectations are met or not doesn't mean much in the long run. People who want to live it up might not understand that view by saying "your life could be so much better", but what if you're happy doing whatever you're doing? Then it couldn't be any better, for you and not them. I'm a pretty relaxed person myself so I can understand where the thoughts are coming from.

It is the most boring job you could have,I am serious. Yeah, It's as easy and comfortable as you said but it's not worth it. Being a janitor is doing the same thing, every single day, without talking to anyone ever, without anything changing beside how dirty the place is. It become so boring that you'll run out of things to think about while working.I even made up a fantasy life in my head and I continued the story the next day. Your mind isn't stimulated at all and you don't learn.
This is my experience and I didn't mean to disrespect people who like the job tho.
By the way, office toilet could surprise you.

I guess it could get mundane but I think that's part of the allure. I'm not that worried about the bathrooms, really that would be a small part of the job.

You need to stretch your idealism.
Dont do easy jobs because of no pressure or responsibilities. Dream. Higher.

I think I'd prefer to dream lower right now. A dream is a dream, and my current dream involves me pushing around one of those floor polishers while whistling.

Occasionally I think I'd like to work in a toll booth. I like to people watch.

I had thought of that at one point but figure it cannot be heathy to stand there breathing in car and truck fumes all day. Other than that I totally agree with you.

Plus they probably have to handle some funky coinage covered in snot or God knows what else.
Okay, so now I don't want to work in a toll booth.

Maybe I could work behind the counter in an adult book store.

i almost got a job like that but my mom would've been too disappointed, i felt too guilty to take it. i always wanted to be a dishwasher too, and my mom was the same with that, now i got a job in food prep and my favorite part is washing the dishes.. i'm in college though, its not really an aspiration for the future, just something to do til i get there.so yeah, i dont see anything wrong with that

I can understand that. Thankfully I don't have that situation. I think it would be finding the right office building janitor job.

That's exactly what I'm thinking. Just relaxed. I remember reading that Andy Kaufman who was "latka" on the show taxi worked as a busboy on his days off. I'm guessing he did it for the same reason.

Like Agent Dark Booty? Sure, go ahead. The world could use more janitors. It's a tough messy job but someone has to do it.
