Is it normal, that i want salespersons to act real?

A few weeks ago, I went to apple store to get my mac fixed. When I was within a few radius of the entrance I was greeted by the salespeople. They acted so happy and like a bunch of smart asses because I forgot to make a appointment. I hated their unearthly "happiness" like they had not a care in the world and I realised how fake their emotions were.

Why do salespeople act like this? Why do they act so sickeningly happy? Real people aren't happy 24/7 so, why must they act so fake? Are their employers scared that customers won't shop in the store if the salespeople don't act happy? That's rather shallow of the customers. I'd rather have a salesperson that's depressed and moody than the latter, because at least it would prove to me that they were "real". This really upsets me. Is this normal?

    Salesperson can be fired or less buy when they are not smile and happy to customers. It remind of my manger when he meet to his customers and he doing happy while he is on bad mood on his job, then he finish with customers and back his bad mood when he enter to his office.

    This is the kind of stuff which annoys me too. I hate myself for doing it, but I get so pissed off by anything to do with sales or advertising. Salesmen pretending to be your friend, as if they're there to help you. Adverts sailing as close to the wind as they can with their lies, without actually breeching rules.

    Psychology should be used to help people, not to manipulate them into buying things they don't want. Sometimes capitalism sucks.

      Ha, I LOVE advertising for the very same reasons! I love to watch commercials, movie previews and such just to pick them apart and find all the 'tricks' and figure out what's crap, or what they're trying to gloss over.

      I also can't feel sorry for people who just don't pay attention. How many times are they going to get screwed over by an ad and still not smarten up? Stupidity sucks, not capitalism!

      The only thing about ads that bug me really is ads aimed at kids. Kids have no defense against the bullshit.

              OK, OK...it's hard to know exactly what someone's thinking through type!! Especially with the subject matter here...you know, salesmen and their use of flattery and all...I thought you were trying to trick me!!

      I completely understand that. Hence, why I had to leave retail. I worked at Toys R Us and whenever I saw customers go for something expensive that I KNEW was a piece of crap, I'd go and tell them that it was an expensive piece of crap and they'd be better off buying the cheaper version because the expensive brand sucks... And other stuff like that...

    Yea it is annoying. I recently had a sales job and it was crammed into our heads to smile and be positive. And the most important thing was always to make a friend. I hated it. But you have to understand, altough we hate it, the majority of the people find it comforting and thats how they make their business.

    I've always said that salespeople who say things like ''Have a good day,'' etc, is ''they're programmed to say that.''

    I agree with your sentiments. These people are robots and it would seem that they would have to put on a charade just to get through the day.

      Next time someone tells you 'Have a good day', just say 'Don't tell ME what to do!!' or my favorite...'Thanks, but I have other plans.'

      That's not true, I'm a cosmetics consultant and normally we are the most robotic, but I wouldn't say have a nice day or anything unless the customer was very nice and I meant it, unless I was saying it a bit sarcastically because the person had ruined my day, :-) but I'm always polite if the customer isn't really rude.

    I dont know, maybe its just me, I would rather deal with a happy customer service agent than a miserable one. They are being paid...... they should be nice.

        Yeah but there job is to be curtious, even through the rough times. If a customer is angry just difuse the situation and exit ~ If you argue back you might as well be shopping there. Just dont let it bother you, your a proffessional.
