Is it normal that i want every living thing on this earth to...

..live forever? Ever since I can remember I've been fascinated with life. People,animals,plants,micro-sized organisms, etc. I get very sad and cry when I hear on the news of people dying, natural disasters killing people, animals, plants, etc. I used to eat meat when I was a child until I realized that an animal had to suffer and be killed just for our consumption and use. I then realized humans are selfish and cruel in their own ways by killing animals for food, game, personal accessories, etc. I am 100% vegetarian but I still feel guilty and sad knowing a plant had to die just so I can eat. Even the tiniest of things such as an ant or roach deserve to live forever. I haven't killed one animal not even a fly since I was small and realized everything has a purpose in life. Can anyone relate to me? Is it even normal to think this way about life?

I do think that it`s a swindle that we only get a few decades of life, it means that life is a race against time to do everything that counts before our bodies crap out on us. I don`t see why we can`t be immortal. Death is a complete waste.

I think it's sweet that you care so much. I'm a vegetarian too and feel sad for things a little bit excessively as well.

What about them dying makes you feel sad? That they have to cease to exist?

My sadness comes down to them feeling pain. I don't believe plants have the capacity to feel pain, and to my knowledge science backs that up, so I don't feel bad eating them. If they suffered in any way, that would be a different story. I understand feeling sad if a great number of plants died, though, especially if the damage was irreparable... like what's happening to the rain forests.

I think they say that insects don't have a nervous system, thus cannot feel pain... but I still don't kill them on purpose, just in case - unless they are causing suffering to something that I know feels pain. For example, my cat had fleas. She was very itchy and was losing fur and had scabby sores on her neck. Her pain outweighs the possibility that they could feel pain, so I did give her flea treatment.

As some people have stated here, we do have to take into consideration our survival- of course. However, we don't "need" to eat meat for our survival (nor use animal based hygiene or beauty products, nor wear fur or leather) or even to thrive. We are not obligate carnivores. Factory farming, which is where all store bought meat comes from, is an industry that causes huge suffering to animals and is essentially torture. It isn't anything like the way animals kill other animals for food in the wild. I cry easily over what those animals have to endure, so I can relate to you there.

I believe in trying your hardest to ease the pain of others, and to refrain from doing things that create suffering in others, even at your own gain- while still surviving. You're doing that, and I don't think you have any reason to feel guilty. I know I can't just tell you to stop feeling bad and you will. I think you're just a sensitive person, and there's nothing wrong with that. But I hope you come to see that you're not doing anything wrong so you can feel less sad/guilty. I'm not sure how to feel less sad over the bad things that go on in the world beyond your control, though.

What about the billions of cells dieing on your body everyday? And you wash yourself still? How dare you!

I respect all life too, but you are going WAY too far. I mean where would we keep the dinosaurs and terradactiles would likely swoop us up for dinner! What about colds and the flu, and even cancer cells, just let them live forever until they kill us? Note, cancer cells usually do kill us.

Mind you I would personally like to not age, but that's life. Live it up whilst you can, because you only live once.

In all honesty, it sounds like you're a little too empathetic for your own good. Don't get me wrong, I believe that we could all use to be empathetic but you're just feeling downright guilty for doing what you need to do to survive. No other species of animal has a problem with killing other animals so that they may survive. I'm not using this to justify killing animals on humans part, but you can't feel so much guilt for your instincts. You have to survive, like every other living being on the planet.

Death is a part of life, without death, there can be no progress.

I don't know. I don't think EVERYTHING can be immortal (we have to eat, so plants at least need to die, for example), sure. There'd definitely be some problems to solve if we figured out how to make people immortal. We'd have to figure out how to either regulate our reproduction or expand our civilisation onto other planets (or both). We'd have to figure out how to teach the very old to change their ideas and grow as our culture changes (think of the racist things people's grandparents' say sometimes because those ideas were acceptable when they were young, then imagine if we had to deal with people from the American Civil War or the crusades). We'd have to deal with our impact on our world.

These are huge problems, but that doesn't mean they're unsolvable. Our cultures and ways of life would definitely change, but I think there might be solutions out there that would make progress possible.

maybe you have a really low tolerance. Either smoke less (for the dankest, you only need to hit it like 2 or 3 times from a bowl) or smoke less potent pot.

You can't have life without death. Everything on this planet consumes something for survival. You just need to find a balance between what you take, and what you give. I love composting for this reason. Plants have to die and decay in order to create a healthy soil that more plants can thrive in. Creating a nice home for bugs that add another element of give and take. And animals (humans included) give to and take from this eco system as well. Without death, nothing would grow. Without growing, life is meaningless.

Heh, I guess I can't relate to you at all, but I can understand why you feel the way you do, I guess.

I'm also a vegetarian, but don't care about plants or roaches dying. Also, why do you think things have a purpose? What purpose? What happens to that purpose once everyone becomes immortal?
