Is it normal that i turned out this way?

My family has totally different values in life than I do, for example I am a huge LGBT supporter and kinda artistic type of person who sees all the beauty and the ugliness in this world but in an ever so inspiring way. But my family (and friends also) are a bunch of judgmental bastards who basically think their opinion is the most valid one of them all, and they hate gays etc. So basically where does this mind set of mine come from? How come with a "parenting" like mine I turned out this way?

I think you're a rare breed. Most people don't tend to think much outside of the 'reality' in which they were brought up. Although as I get older, I notice things about my folks I'm glad I haven't picked up. Consciously made a choice not to be like that. Who knows where you get that open-mindedness though... just be glad it's there.

  • I don't think that's unusual. Personally I have never been able to comprehend how people do not think for themselves and follow what they're told. It makes no sense to me to be anything but an independent thinker.

does it matter how others do it and should it really effect the way you act or think.. and specially when you know that your views or feelings are considered or actually are far better.

what you think or do is going to define you and what they do is going to define them.

BTW, according to me yours is obviously better! very few people in today's era can actually notice the beauties and good aspects in this world! its all so insecure, mean and self centered that finding people like you is kinda difficult , believe me!
and umm maybe that's because of your peer group or close friends who might think the way you do! it can be the influence of some good books or a better teacher. It can also be the effect of your the things that might inspire you and more than anything else it actually comes NATURALLY! most good things are actually gifted...
in the end I'd say ... HEY STOP! THINKING AS TO WHERE IT CAME FROM! just appreciate the way you're different in a positive way. would you like it if you become like them?

Individuality. One of the miraculous and joyous things in life is being unique from one another. Some betray that, you are true to it.

I am actually the same way. Except my parents and family doesn't hate gays. They never understood my view on the world though.

My parents, although they claim not to be racist or homophobic, constantly try to justify comments of this nature. Fortunately neither I nor my sisters have picked these traits up, so I would say resisiting adopting bad traits is normal.

  • Maybe its the simple fact that you were smart enough to see past your families ignorant and judgemental ways.

If your family think their opinions are basically fact, then they're possibly quite insecure. Carry on being yourself : )

I'm happy that your open minded about lifestyles. I show similar support but what confuses me is the snarky jokes that gay men make such as "glad I'm gay".... "who needs women"...."all men want cock"...etcetera

I can understand your family being that way, however, I am surprised you have friends that are sooo different from you.

Nowadays, people receive more influences than ever before as they grow up. We have contact with a wider range of people, and when that happens we are more able to make rational judgements.

Our society is very much individualistic, which promotes thinking for yourself rather than forming the same values as your family.
