Is it normal that i think this way towards labels and stereotypes?

I've noticed that people often deny there labels when it comes to style. Example:
Person 1: Are you a hipster?
Person 2: No. Don't label me I'm not a soup can.
To me that's stupid. That's like saying don't call me by my name, I'm not a soup can or don't call these flowers daisys because they don't want to be grouped.
I think people don't want to be labeled because it comes with stereotypes.
Example: Hipsters think they have better taste in clothing music. They're cocky
Scene kids think they're the shit. They act like they're so awesome and hot.
Stereotypes are stupid. Stereotypes try to stick a personatalities on labels. This is what I think is most likely why people don't like being labeled because once they admit theyre a certain style or styles people will assume that they act a certain way. It's ridiculous. I wish more people would be straight toward with they're style. My point is just because you look a certain way doesn't mean you act a certain way. Am I the only one who think s this way? Do you understand? It's not just hipsters and scene kids. Sorry if you feel offended. Those were the only examples I could think of.

I'm a bit confused by what you said. You say you think it's stupid that people deny labels that fit them? Then explain that you think those stereotypes are stupid like you understand where they're coming from :S

Unfortunately humans love to put things into groups, we think it makes things easier to understand. Labeling someone makes them feel limited and as if they're being judged, which is fair enough. I mean you're ignoring individual characteristics. Then again there are some that like to be labelled and are proud of it.

    • Labels are just simply used to identify something or someone. Like classifying a race, style, or animal. I don't understand how that's judging someone. You can't just not have a name for something. Stereotypes give certain labels a bad name which makes that person feel like there being judged or limited for how they dress. How a person dresses does not describe that persons personality. Everyone is an individual and Stereotypes are not allowing people to be an individual with a style.

I think we agree but I think of labels as stereotypes (when it comes to social cliques anyway). People feel like they're being judged -because- you take a look at them and label them, therefore judging everything else from appearance, right?
I used to get labelled/stereotyped, more often than I do now, and it annoyed me because I felt like people made assumptions about me that went with that label when it may not be true about me at all.
So of course I agree that how a person dresses does not describe their personality but labels/stereotypes include personality types.

        • What do you mean by label/stereotypes include personality types? No labels do not have anything to do with personality. I mean, look up the difference between labels and stereotypes and the meaning of both words. You'll see what I'm talking about. I agree that we can't help making assumptions about the way a person acts. People perceive me as a stuck conceited angry person but I'm not. Im a Really sweet person who cares for others and trys not to hurt them. It's just when Im alone I have an angry face on. Can't help it. Lol :)

I think people need to quit giving so much of a shit about what other people do if it doesn't affect their lives. Get a life and find something worth talking about, there is more to the world than what Stranger #1 is wearing and what Stranger #2 is listening to on his MP3 player.

    • Thank you. I think so too. :)
But unfortunately some people don't see that way. People need to respect other people's lives and not try to change that person.

I'd get into the whole "ridiculing others as a biproduct of the need to show one's dominance for survival purposes" thing, but it's kind of something we all have to realize for ourselves.

I think you are right. And people genuinely do act to their stereo type in my opinion. Occasionally people shock you.

  • You guys. Never mind. I get what you mean. People hate other people labeling them. I think only you can label yourself because your the only one who knows yourself. Everyday your changing the way you think, your style, your emotions. Only you can can truly describe yourself. Am I right?

I agree that people do place labels on themselves by what they wear.
Please consider the following contrasting examples:
A person dressed in a traditional Canadian Mountie Uniform.
A man dressed in a Thawb and Keffiyeh.
I disagree with the viewpoint that the two persons (above) would act the same way.The two persons (above) have placed labels on themselves, thus are most likely to act in disparate ways.
It is true that groups of people are subject to be stereotyped because of this.
Stereotypes are extremely dangerous but can also uncover truths in ourselves and others. In any group or culture there are disparate personality types; sometimes good or bad.
I think that we should try not to place people, groups or cultures into stereotypes. I also think that we should all be able to laugh about our own stereotype; eg "Ahm a dumb Amurican".

Stereotypes are there because they are real lol fuckin people...if they weren't true MOST of the time then where did they come from hmmmmm. :D

  • Hmmm... I think I understand what you guys sorta mean about labels. But could explain why labels are bad when I'm telling you what a label is? (Dont take that in a mean way. I trying to be as sensitive about the situation as possible so no one blow your tops off.)
There is a difference between labels and stereotypes. Labeling is just a name to categorize people, and stereotyping is like because they are this label, they act this way.
For example: Stereotype: Because your a gay guy you like hanging out with girls only and you don't do manly things.
A label has no deep meaning.

I don't think most people walk around thinking to themselves that they are a 'style'. They might have similarities with a certain style/stereotype but they'd prefer that people judge them as an individual.

Have you ever thought that these labels/stereotypes don't apply to all countries all over the world? In my country, for example, these kinds of things hardly exist. In fact, people would look at you strangely if you openly admit that you're in one of these labels.

I don't know about the others but I certainly don't stick to one style only. I can wear baggy shirt and shorts, frilly camisole and skirt, fitted shirt and skinny jeans; basically, I wear what I feel like wearing. If you see me on daily basis, I'm sure a hundred a percent you can't even label me. Hahaha! I find this whole label thing amusing actually.

And since I'm not surrounded by 'labels', I'd say it's unusual for you to think so.
Not 'not normal', just plain unusual.
But since there's no 'Yes, it's unusual' option, I voted for 'No, it's not normal'.
    Lol! I'm sorry~
