Is it normal that i think "team minded people" are weak?

Is it normal to hate Team-only minded people? The ones that can't imagine solo activity like windsurfing instead of playing on a baseball/basketball/etc. "Team". They can't seem to do anything by or for themselves, they always need to involve a bunch of "able" people to do anything because they just can't seem to do anything alone. They sponge off of everyone else in the name of "Team" this and that and then try to claim credit or accomplishment while at the same time secretly hating all those self-reliant people that make things happen.

Completely agree. I hate teamwork, for the most part. Unless it involves ACTUAL work where you can't slack off. Games and hanging out and other bullshit is stupid, it's a way for failures to cover their shortcomings, or for the one assface who takes credit for all the work or puts others down for not being 'good enough' even though they're probably just as good or better-or just to make themselves look better. Stupid.

Thank you! I couldn't agree more. I was beginning to think I was the only person on the planet that thought this!

No no no that is not called "Team minded" that is called "Codependent". Being able to work in a team does not mean you are unable to work alone. Just means you work well in a team. Some people who are more "independent" will have issues working with others.

That also has to do with what people you put together. Some people I believe are just not compatible with each others. As well as that to be a good leader you have to be a good follower but not all followers are actually leader material.

We have the "extrovert" and the "introvert". The "introvert" is going to want to be left alone and work alone and often when put in a group ends up getting frustrated or taking over. The "Extrovert" enjoys working in a group and socializing with people.

They probably are more willing to be in a group project and work with others. However simply being an "Extrovert" does not mean you are going to lose your mind if someone is not holding your hand and telling you what to do every second of the day.

If you need someone to tell you what to do and when to do it and do nothing but look for everyone else approval and affections all the time at any cost you are "codependent". Being "codependent" is not healthy.

i was a state champion in singles tennis, but my favorite sport was Baseball. it's more fun being on a team, though sometimes frustrating if you have weak players.

I usually work by myself, but not always by choice.

Its the theory on Social Loafing, in which when several people are doing the same thing, a couple might do less (or no) work then they would if they were working by themselves.

I half agree. Members that leach off of the team and take credit when the team succeeds, whether it be sports, work, or anything else, are weak. But the people that truly are responsible for the success of the team are strong people still, sometimes even stronger than the individual workers!

I know I would MUCH rather be solely responsible for results, whether at work, or in sports, or anything else, than have to rely on others who might fail and drag me down! I feel that the team strong points and the people that drag the weak to success with them are the strongest of all.

I think it depends on the goal. At work, we all have our individual roles. If I don't do my job well, my coworkers can't do theirs. And if they provide me with crap, I can't do my job very well. One person failing will make the whole look bad. But say it's something like team trivia, then idiots can get credit for winning when they don't contribute anything. That is nothing to be proud of.

I disagree with the generalisation. If you're in a team with vastly different people (let's say someone who is depressed, someone who keeps wanting to be leader even though they aren't the best for the role, someone who is disruptive, someone who is lazy, someone who is prejudiced, someone who is feeling insecure) and you then have to get this team to perform, I'd say you can be anything but weak-minded.

For many, it can be hard to motivate even themselves into their best work, but motivating another (with a different mindset) is harder still. Motivating a bunch of them, all with different mindsets, and keeping a rudder on all the individual clashes in personality, sticking points, sacrificing yourself for the team, and not being bombastic about your own ideas... it's very difficult and often thankless.

It is *SO* much easier to work alone and just be responsible for yourself. Being a good team-minded person is so difficult that most people don't even try (making it more difficult again).

I do have to disagree completely with the generalisation. However, I will agree that most teams don't have a motivator. And I don't mean someone who sets themselves up as a motivator (they're always dreadful) but someone who does it quietly and carefully (and, ideally, without it being noticed). It's rare for people to care enough. Because of that, teams that could have produced something great, often fail. Teams, in general, fail.

Thanks for your response. You bring up great points I'm familiar with from my past college business bachelor and MBA courses, as well as coaching youth football and basketball, and running a small business for decades. (So I'm really not opposed to teams here, or the need to have teams in many situations... I'm really just making an observation that teams are no substitute for self-reliance and pulling ones own weight in all situations. The "team-only-minded", similar to government, seem to fall into an abyss of "nothing is of real value unless it is done as a team" (e.g. those who only value kids team sports and not individual sports.) Team members all too often also seem to exploit the team when they don't perform as "individuals striving for the team"... all for reasons you point out, etc.)

Yes, the self-reliance aspect is something I didn't really talk about because I completely agree. I also think I may have bluntly focussed my answer on a specific type of team. I was thinking very much of project teams (I'm a member of very many, and leader for some). The dynamic is obviously very different for teams in a sporting sense.

I completely agree with you that the inclusivity of "team-only-mindedness" allows people to hide behind the team and also not develop certain strengths that are required as individuals. I've nothing against team sports but I'd hate to live in a world where they were valued above individual sport for very dodgy reasons.

        Interesting post, by the way.

  • You're right. I don't mean sports at all here (because sports could be awesome sometimes), but in other aspects of life "team-players" are usually almost the same as the herd mentality.

Think for yourself, keep quiet and be stronger than everybody else. And the zombie apocalypse comes - live happily ever after!
