Is it normal that i think majoring in art is bullshit?

i'm going to school and going to major in art. the courses i've taken so far though i feel like they're shit. it seems like that what everyone does is make some shitty picture and then describes what the shitty picture means. i want to be an illustrator and is majoring in art the path i want to take for this? i don't want to describe what my picture is. symbolism is a good thing to come by but i just like producing beautiful images, not some shitty blue and purple toned image that comes up to somehow represent "life and death." i like stuff being straight forward and design school seems more like the answer but i hear it's a lot more corporate than what people would actually think it is and not only that, i feel like design is more advertising than what i want to do, which again is illustration. in the end, i feel like going to school for art is bullshit and so are the people who consider themselves artists. any insights on this situation and what major i should really be looking into?

Most arts degrees are bullshit because you don't actually need a degree to create what you enjoy. A lot of arts school has to do with meeting the right people and opening up your influences into things that you usually wouldn't to make you a more well rounded artist. You should take the time to understand what your classmates are creating, because understanding peoples intentions in what they create are very important to understanding their art.

  • Well, I would stop hating on artists, maybe you don't see art like that and that's fine but art has a different definition for everyone.

I think illustrations are nice but I like a piece with emotion and power in it. So see, that's an example of how everyone has a different definition. As for your major, choose the one you want to do. It's always good to know what you want but it never hurts to look at things from a different perspective either.

Not all artists are like that. Only the ones in the art community. Simply being an artist does not make you part of the "Art community".

Art is never "straight forward." Pick a real major...probably science related.

You know I am an artist as well and I totally get where you are coming from. You are not the only one who feels this way. I have met a lot of talented artists who feel just like you do. You see the people running the art community think everything should have a meaning to it.

Not everyone who paints/draws a picture had a meaning to it though. Sometimes people just felt like making the picture. You don't need to have any real meaning to your art. Sometimes you just feel like doing it.

Your art might yes reflect you as a personality as well as showing your style but art is really just something you do. A truly talented artist does art but that does not mean they really thought about the art. People get angry at "Andy Warhol" and while like most artists I think he was a complete idiot and not a real artist he had something right.

Why did you make a soup can "I like soup" and that response angered people. However really its the truth. Sometimes you draw a dog "Because you like dogs" or "You felt like drawing a dog". Not everything has some deeper meaning to it.

That is what is great about art. You just do it. Art is not something you really have to think about. Why writing is a lot more complicated. You have to think when you write you really do not have to put a ton of thought into what your picture means. sometimes you just draw what you see.

I could tell you "Draw this statue" and you could draw the statue perfectly. Now did that mean that picture means anything? No! you were simply following instructions.

No offense but the best artists always have a lot of natural talent and passion, as well as an interesting life. So if you're just some random kid who decided to go to art college then it's unlikely you'll produce anything worth our time. Might as well quit and get a real job.
