Is it normal that i think google translate is shit?

Personally it is shit because it is inaccurate and also it does not even make any sense to what you choose to translate, you are better off asking someone who speaks that specific language or learning it.

A piece of shit that fails as a whole.

I agree with you that google translate is far from perfect. It's fair at best.

However, none of the other electronic translation programs are any better (and I've tried 2 others).

My wife is from Ukraine and we met on the internet through a dating site. I did not know she was in Ukraine and could not speak English, and I only know a few words of Russian or Ukrainian (she is fluent in both).

We used google translate all the time... and it worked well enough for us to meet - and marry.

We now laugh about the misconceptions we had based on the google translate errors... (although a few of them presented real challenges for us to work out when we discovered them).

It was the best tool we had - and it worked good enough so we had a fairly good understanding of each other.

I also use it (and other translation programs) for both personal and work reasons. For critical translations I hire an actual person who is fluent in the language and the subject under discussion (example: I was doing some engineering work for a Chinese project a few years ago. I found a Chinese immigrant who was an engineer here in the USA for translation assistance as they would understand the engineering terms and issues I was dealing with - and be able to properly translate the portions of the documents I was interested in). However, I cannot afford to pay $$$ per hour for most routine news and documents (can you?)

I'm not going to criticize Google Translate. It's a case of understanding its limitations, and understanding when its worth paying for good translation.
