Is it normal that i stopped a bad habit then started again badly?

I bite my nails. I grew up biting my nails all the way down to the nub and eating them. When i turned about 14 i forced myself to somehow stop and i discontinued nailbiting for about a year or two. Then i started again very slowly, controllingly, but stopped again and now i bite my nails again all the way down to the nub. I hardly let the mgrow before i bite them again. i hate this. but i dont know why its happening. IIN?

Dip your fingertips in hotsauce. Works for teething dogs.

Stress can cause a bad habit to form again, there are so many examples: smoking, drinking... etc. Your example is not as self-distructive but it might be a coping mechanism. Can you think of any event that caused you to start biting them again? Try to be as mindful as possible - it's hard, I used to bite my nails too... then replaced it with smoking... then quit - I figure I always had to do something with my hands to make social situations seem more relaxed or something.
    Good Luck quiting again!!
