I'm happily married now..

We always stay in touch for some reason.
We live in different states.

Known him since I was 12 and hhe lives in our hometown.

    Yeah. I am still friends with my ex's. If you got along enough to have a relationship you can usually get along enough for a friendship. Sometimes people just arent compatible partners but are great friends. I will say there are exceptions when relationships end on bad terms but mine ended on good terms and we just had our differences.

    Has he ever been your lover?
    If not, then I see no problem. Once married, I believe that exes belong in the past. I cannot see any good with keeping in touch with exes unless there are kids involved.
