Is it normal that i still don't have a job?

I still don't have a job and I've been applying and leaving resumes at all kinds of places. It's been a couple months now. I live in Southern California, if that may give anyone some perspective. I'm looking for my first job, I think it's harder for those of us who lack experience. I also just graduated high school. I know I should've started looking sooner. Well, what am I doing wrong? When I talk to managers I always smile and act professional and polite. I think that they may be able to tell that I'm reserved, though. Is shyness really that big of a turn off to potential employers? It's hard for me to try to be outgoing, it's just too unnatural for me.

Work for free. Just pick the place and start sweeping the floor. When they say "wtf" just say you want to work there. If they tell you to leave come back in an hour and start weeding the garden, washing the windows, emptying the rubbish bins. Rock up at 11:45 and say hey guys I'm getting lunch, you want anything from the shop? If after a week they don't hire you, my advice is rubbish.

        Hello! You've been quiet.

Actually I am offering my services for free shortly to gain experience in high voltage electrical switching.

With any luck he will pay me and I will subcontract to him in the future.

Start volunteering at places, that'll look great on your resume. Also, when you turn in an application, if you haven't heard from them in a week, check back. Call them or stop in, and ask them if they've had time to look over your app. It'll let them know you're interested and serious.

Dude just pray to GOd that you need a job, and when he blesses you with one, then bless the church with an offering

I for one took a course in work experiance at a universaty. a few good things a good employer will be looking for is a good handshake, eye contact, and no figiting.
try writing a resume of your skills and qualifications.
whatch what you say, ask your family members of there first job and how they got it. you sometimes have to start at the bottom, so if that means cleaning toilets then get to it. don't exagerate on your self, they may expect it from you in the future.
try vollenteering jobs, that also helps. and for peet sakes, don't wear too much perfume. employers hate that..
    good luck.

  • Don't be shy, man. Be polite, but very assertive. I used to interview new kids at my previous work place, and regardless of age -a good communication skills and confidence were definitely a big plus when I had to call people back.

If you're not really a "people" kinda person, try to aquire a craft or skill -like construction and etc. where nobody cares how you look or how you talk and people value you for your trade.

    • Thanks for the advice, I know I need to aquire some kind of skill. I'm decent on the computer, I'm hoping that may help me become an entry level secretary somewhere or something like that.

      • it's still a form of a frontal desk job, so you'll need to address the customers. People skills will be needed there. it's something you just have to act, if it's not natural. I've spent in customer service many years and hated every minute of it -I'm introvertive to the point of anti-social. But i just thought about it as .. an actor who acts a character, and it worked for a while.

        good luck!

It's probably due to the economic crisis... What skills do you have?

    • I have good writing and English skills. My typing is fairly fast and I'm decent at using the computer. I can flip a burger and I know how to clean. That's about it so far.

Well, that's not that bad. Have you tried applying for a secretary or maid position?

Its normal I graduated last year class of 2011 and I've been looking for a job since I turned sixteen. It's been 5 years and I've put in countless applications and had a million interviews but I still don't have a job. I'm starting to think maybe I'm not meant to have a job, maybe I'm meant for something else. But we'll get a job someday just keep your head up kid :)

Are you 18, do you own a car, can you piss clean, and do you have a clean criminal record? If the answer to all of those questions is yes and you live in Orange, LA or San Diego county, I'm willing to give you a link to a site where you will have a good chance of getting a job if you apply.

    • Yes to all except for the car and the county. I take the bus and live in Riverside county. Thanks for the offer, though.

I live in Riverside too, getting a job here is close to impossible unless you know people. I'm still searching my ass off to no avail. Someone once told me that because of the shortages, they have a specific profile they follow if they don't hire their friends before you anyways: Dumb, bilingual, and temporary/pt time. Dumb so they can pay you w/e and you won't say shit, bilingual cuz hey! Its Socal! Temp/pt time so they won't have to deal with raises/benefits. I'm truly starting to believe that. There was a Harbor Freight that just opened up here in MoVal, applied, spoke to a manager, got the run around...Went in to see what it looked like when it opened. Guess who worked there? A fat bitch talking about how many guys she fucked at a party on company time. Didn't even know what tf a fuel pressure tester was.

Oh, well, look up UPS security in google and click the third link (the first two are advertisements). Look it over anyway and see if they can hook you up with anything in your county.

One more thing: There's another 24hr WalMart opened on Day St next to the reg walmart. I heard the management is shit, but a job's a job at this point. Gonna try there myself as well. Good luck ^^

You should have gotten a job a little sooner, but I think the problem is the economy. I am also from Socal, and I can tell you, it's hard to find a good job there. Especially when the managers dont want to hire white boys.

Honey they dont want to hire anyone.

      Comment Hidden ( show )
    • Yeah, that's very true. I'm a white girl and a lot of places are looking for people who are bilingual. One place told me that they would've hired me if they hadn't found someone else who could speak Spanish. Guess I better start learning the basics, maybe that'll help me get somewhere.
