Is it normal that i still can't tell the gender of a student?

There's this underclassman (I'm a senior in my high school and it's my second year here) who is new this year. I'm pretty sure this person is a freshman, but possibly a sophomore. He or she does not talk much at all, and I can't say I've ever observed him/her making social contact with anybody, ever. S/he dresses in gender-ambiguous clothing, has shoulder length hair that appears unkept and wears glasses. Usually s/he wears baggy hoodies and cargo pants or baggy jeans but does not have a masculine face. His/her voice does not really offer any clues. I've asked a few people about this and they didn't know either. S/he also carries around a large backpack which causes him/her to lean forward awkwardly when walking through hallways. I thought I found out when s/he walked into the boys' bathroom during first semester but around 2 1/2 weeks later s/he entered the girls' bathroom after school. What is going on here?

They are probably dressing androgynous on purpose as they don't feel they fit into either gender. Asking them may be a senstive subject, so you may just have to let this one go.

This person probably has one of those "gender confusion" disorders. Even if you knew what "equipment" they have, it might not be the sex that they associate themselves with anyway.

Talk to this person about some random subject and ask them their name. If the person's first name is kinda unisex then tell them its a nice name and ask them what their middle name is.

With some people it's hard to tell.

I don't know whether you're too preoccupied with the gender of this person, or you just find it a bit odd. In any case, from your description, it sounds as if this person could be having a difficult high school experience as it is, and gossiping about this person isn't going to help.

Treat said person with respect, and don't worry about their sex/gender. If you ever get to have anything to do with this person, his/her name might give a hint, which may help you avoid awkward questions.

Have a conversation with them. A normal one that you would have with anyone. Eventually you may figure out their gender based on reactions to questions and such.

I was in a room once with three people and I couldn't determine the gender of any them. In the end, I decided it didn't matter.

It's normal to be unsure. I was unable to tell with a few people back in high school, myself.
However, the difference was, I noticed, got confused, and then it didn't bother me since I wasn't friends with them or anything.

Unless you guys speak often and hang out, it's probably not important and you should probably let it go.
