Is it normal that i started gaining weight again?

So a little backstory - I was largely overweight for the majority of my life. In high school and college I was inactive and was about 30-50 lbs heavier than I should have been. After college I found a good job and had a lot of spare time so I finally got my act together. I lost a lot of weight, maybe even too much, going from 215 to about 150 in a year (I'm a 5'8" guy). I don't remember exactly when it happened, but I recall the lowest weight I ever recorded myself as was 144 lbs.

That was a few years ago, and all the time I have been running (3.5 miles) about 3-4 times a week and also play on some local sport leagues with my friends. I'm getting good physical activity AT LEAST five times a week.

I was sitting around the 150 lbs range until about six months ago when it really started to tick up. Soon I noticed 160 lbs became the new norm so I started to increase the intensity of my runs and slightly decrease the size of my meals. That was maybe three months ago, but I just hit 168 lbs and I don't really know where it's going to stop. My diet hasn't really changed significantly and if anything I'm working out more than I have been years ago.

I can feel my shirts and pants getting tighter and I'm starting to get paranoid that soon I'm going to have to start buying bigger clothes. When I run I can feel things bouncing in places that I haven't felt before. My abs definitely have more jiggle to them than they did months ago. My self esteem has been greatly improved since I left college, and I don't want to go back to having those feelings of being out of shape, sloppy, undesirable, and ugly.

First, muscle is denser than fat. So if you run a lot, you may be gaining muscle, which is ok.

Second, if you were a little underweight, yes your body will try and store up some reserves again.

Third, you need to focus on the quality of your meals, not the quantity. I'm not a runner, but the best diet for anyone is lean white proteins, dark veggies, and plenty of water. Focus your diet on proteins, antioxidants, and fiber (foods with lots of fiber or antioxidants will generally have lots of vitamins.) Fruits too, but generally only 1 serving of carbs per meal, and 1 red meat a week.

If you eat well and exercise well, but you're gaining fat (not just weight, but fat) maybe you should talk to your doctor about your insulin being out of whack. (btw, that's where fiber comes in because it slows the release of foods.)
