Is it normal that i started drinking at the age of 12?

I was at my friend's house and a bunch of us were unsupervised. We were young, curious, and bored. My best friend at the time because mixing vodka with Tang and I remember that I hated the taste of it, at first. Over time, the alcohol really began to grow on me. Fast forward a few years and I can honestly say that alcohol has affected every single major relationship in my life, and almost all of those experiences were negative. I am 20 now and my life is going nowhere. So basically, is it normal to start drinking at such a young age. When did you start drinking, if ever?

I would love to hear from anyone who has anything to say on the subject. Thanks for helping me out!

I tried alchohol at that age but there is a difference between trying and regular drinking. If you feel it is affecting your life then you should stop immediately or your life will never go anywhere

agree. regular drinking is a bad idea when you're a child or teenager because your brain is still forming and the alcohol can affect its development -- permanently and irreversibly.

Am I the only person on this website who had a relatively innocent childhood?? XD Aside from giving me a sip of scotch when I was 3 so I wouldn't want alcohol ever, I didn't drink til I was 18. O.o

No, you're not alone- I also have had a relatively innocent childhood!

Sites like these tend to attract people who have had problems in the past, are unsure of certain issues, and trying to find out if "it's normal." People who have an innocent childhood will have less incentive to come on these sites. Thanks for your comment.

I had an innocent childhood. Completely innocent and sheltered. Literally nothing bad happened to me until I was 16.

Aside from some bad things when I was very young, I was really sheltered til I hit 18 and was allowed to go out and do things on my own.

I started drinking at a young age and if fucked me up completely, I still hate myself for it tbh. But some people will just say I was young and still am, others will call me a complete waste, like my parents, tbh, I wish I never started drinking so young. But I guess shit happens.

You're not the only one. First time I got 'drunk' was when I was 11 at a barbeque/slumber party. My friends parents were having a barbeque at their house, and my friend invited a lot of her friends over to spend the night. Well..., when the barbeque was over, we got into some trouble. We snuck into the kitchen at like 1 in the morning and started drinking the left over alcohol drinks that were in the fridge.

I remember her mom had a pina colada pitcher just sitting there... looking lonely. We were curious to see what it tasted like, because all the parents were drinking it earlier that day. So we decided we'd try it, and then we ended up drinking some of her dads beer. But to make a long story short; We got into a lot of trouble for that!

I never touched alcohol again until I was 17 at a family party. And then of course there was this one other time, in the Bahamas. But even still today, if I drink, its very little. I don't even really care for the taste to be quite honest.

      Hi Ldizzy 1234,

Thank you for responding. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one with these experiences. However, I never got caught until it was too late, and I was addicted. I'm happy to know that at least one of us had the willpower to stop.

      Again, thank you for commenting

        Hey TreeGo,

Anytime! But I'm sure a lot more people than you think are in the same predicament as you are right now. Maybe you should get counseling. I know its probably easier said than done, but start from there.

        Good luck! :)

If you think alcohol is seriously affecting the way you live (and waste, to my understanding) your life you should definitely stop drinking.

I always believed drinking was just a stupid idea, especially for the younger people who indulge in it. In my country you can already legally drink from the age of 16 and the kids nowadays use that privilege to the fullest.

The thing I noticed about alcohol the past few years is that it has definitely grown very common for basically everyone to consume it (more).

It has even grown so common that when people now ask me to 'go out to drink' with them at a party and I tell them I don't drink, their reaction would often be something along the lines of: "Seriously? What are you, a nun or something."

Bad. Stop. Moderate. I guess I was 13. When I think back to being able to drink about six hard boozes mixed in one bottle, straight, I want to vomit. I'm so glad I don't really drink anymore. My memory is bad enough. I don't need whole days lost because I was thirsty

I think I was five, but it was only when there was a family party or something and I was allowed very little (a glass of sparkling wine or cider). Because I was such a ball of nervous energy, taking a drink allowed me to feel this blissful state that most people take for granted; just being able to sit still and relax.

I started looking forward to Christmas (we had cherry wine on Boxing Day) and I distinctly remember nagging my dad repeatedly when the wine was forgotten. I started drinking at a snooker club when I was 15. Nothing too heavy. A couple of bottles of beer or half a pint of cider.

At 18, I bought a bottle of overproof vodka and drank the lot. I don't remember much of what happened but I'm very lucky to be alive considering what I do remember.

As time has gone on, I've lost any enjoyment I get from alcohol. I use it when I can't sleep or when times are hard. It's medicine. If there was a medical solution to my insomnia, I might not touch it at all. I hope you get to that point too.

They don't work for me. The only thing that did work was hospital-strength stuff but they laid me so low, I'd rather have insomnia.

Every case is different, man. I started drinking and smoking around 7th grade.. which makes it 13. Started doing drugs a few years later. I'm an athlete now, and yes i had problems and i had to stop everything and start living clean.

So when you start is not a problem, when you quit is.

Yes, I agree. I can personally attest to the notion that quitting is much harder than starting. It sounds like we both started drinking at around the same age. I am glad you had the willpower to stop.

no it is not normal, and the younger you start things the more you are going to do them later and the more they will affect your life. my friend had sex for the first time at 7, and smoking and drinking at 10, he is now a sex addict who cheats on his hot girlfriend throughout his 2 year relationship with ugly fat easy girls and blows his money on weed and alcohol and can't pay rent

      Hi Allistalla,

I live in the United States and no, it isn't legal. That most people do not even realize that they are violating laws when they consume alcohol before they are 21 only demonstrates just how strongly embedded alcohol is into the fabric of American culture.

probably not the best thing to do at a young age.. I mean yeah you screw around with that kind of stuff. But dont get to in to in. You will seriously mess up your life, and your body.

I remember taking my first sip of beer when I was 5-6 years old. I didn't like the taste of it and reminded me of cold medicine back then or something similar. I fist got drunk when I was 11-12 years of age and loved how it made me feel. I would get drunk on and off rarely over the years. Im now 20 going on 21 and haven't been drunk in awhile. I recently tried drinking a strong tequila and felt like throwing up after taking each sip,I guess its too strong? So yea I guess its normal as long as it doesn't affect your life.

      Hi Dreamboat,
Thank you for responding. I was struck by the similarities that we share. I also got drunk at 12 and now I'm 20 and I hate drinking, even though now I am in college and almost all of my friends drink. I rarely ever drink now, so I feel very left out sometimes, but alcohol just reminds me of my past.

No problem. Its a good thing that you don't drink with your friends because that would just make you want to drink more and more causing you to have more problems like you stated in your post. Not only that but you can do some pretty stupid things that you normally wouldn't do while sober. Im also in college but don't drink with friends or anything. If i had the option to choose between weed and alcohol I would choose weed in a heart beat. I think its harmless compared to alcohol.

Yes, marijuana is much less dangerous than alcohol. It has been really tough for me to stop drinking especially in my stage of life, when most of my peers are always looking for the next opportunity to be inebriated. But you're right, drinking alcohol is just one regret that leads to more regrets.

My first experience of binge drinking was a mates 13th birthday party. @31 I'm still improving my drinking habits.

I'm not sure I'm any worse for it but I have done things I wouldn't have otherwise done and don't recall things that I wish I could.

I was never really a big underage drinker, surprisingly!! I'd say I drank regularly, but not often, like once-twice a month from about 16-21. There were periods in there where I'd binge and drink every day for a week straight or so. Drinking was never a big deal for me.

I started working in bars around the age of 22 and would drink every day at work almost, but if I didn't work that day I wouldn't drink.

Now I go through periods of drinking every day for months straight, and then not drinking at all for even more months, as if I couldn't even stomach the thought.

I have a strange relationship with alcohol, sometimes it seems vital and sometimes it disgusts me. Alcohol has only caused petty problems for me, and that was in the past when I'd be in public, you know...doing dumb shit....but I never got arrested for anything while drunk. I've gotten DUI's but not for alcohol. Drugs have caused me a few bigger problems, but nothing I couldn't get over. I never got too far gone!! Amazingly....I was really, really lucky considering all the shit I had been involved in with drugs.

I was 13 when I started really drinking more regularly. I wasn't getting shit faced every night, but it happened almost weekly. I was probably 9 the first time I was actually tipsy though.

I purposely didn't drink alcohol till I was 18, probably relating to the fact during my teen years I was a hermit and didn't hang out with anyone outside school.
