Is it normal that i smile at sad news?

when someone tells me something sad that happened to them I have the urge to smile. For example if someone said their grandfather just died then I start smiling. Its weird because you are supposed to fell sorry for that person, and i do, its just that i still smile. Sometimes i have to bite the inside of my cheek to stop my smile. Is this normal?

I do it too. I have compassion for people but sometimes my reaction is the opposite of what it should be. Im also calm and collected when all hell is breaking loose around me and everyone is freaking out.

It's called nervous laughter and it's an anxiety disorder, I do it too sometimes even when I'm incredibly sad for the person and I actually want to cry! It makes me feel so bad but I really can't help or stop the reaction my body does. It makes ppl think we r horrible when in actual fact most ppl who suffer from this are very emotional and caring(unless of corse they are actually doing it because they think it's funny- sociopaths) look up nervous laughter on google and u will see what I mean, it is an actual thing we have

There's something mentally wrong with you. Maybe you've gone through something traumatizing to end up like this.

That happens to me also! I dont do it on purpose or that I feel happy, just happens and I have to force a neutral/sad face.

  • yes that is normal i get that way to because i feel unconfortable around that person & i don't know what 2 tell them so i just smile..but really you are feeling sad for them & want to tell them your sorry and cheer them up but just dont know the right words to say..so you just smile not knowing what to say..But in reality you know smiling isn't the right thing to do.

  • I laughed when I heard Michael Jackson died.... Seriously, I also laughed when my friend broke his wrist and couldn't complete a esay I only laughed though because he got caught jacking off and fell when that happend (that was long ago) and I laughed and asked him did you get caught again ignoring the fact that he failed the semester.

i do this when i get nervous. when i hear something terribly traumatic or sad, i get a little smile because i can't think of anything appropriate to say and i feel like a dumbass...i try my hardest not to smile because i know its wrong.
