Is it normal that i sleep with a light on?

I'm 19 years old and I'm scared of the dark. When I go to bed I have to keep a small light on, otherwise I feel uncomfortable and I can't sleep. I'll sit up in bed and look around the room for ages. If I'm going to sleep with somebody else in the room then I don't feel so bad, it's mostly when I'm on my own that I get frightened. I have always needed to sleep with a light on, ever since I was very young.

Completely normal. It's natural to be afraid of the unknown. In this case it's the unknown in the dark. I'm the same. I even have this motto 'I'm not afraid of the dark...I'm afraid of what's in it'

I'm 18 next month and I sleep with my big light on all the time! I get freaked out otherwise. My mum switches my light off in the middle of the night when she get's up and if I wake up and it's still dark I hide under my quilt and wait until it get's a bit light.
But if it's still hours away from being light I quickly jump out of bed and run for the light switch LOL.
So yeah, I think it's normal.. if not then oh well xD

I was still scared of the dark (and sometimes still am now) until I was almost 25. I have an over-active imagination. Now that I'm married and have a couple cats, I'm not as scared anymore. But when I was alone, every night was horrible!!! I know how you feel.

You're 19 yrs old so im not sure if it's normal for u to still keep any lights on unless you're doing homework and/or leisure activities in yor room. Being afraid of the dark involves not seeing anything becuz there's no light around, and once u fall asleep, u wont even be thinking bout the darkness...

are you aware of the amount of energy you're throwing away just because of your fear? we're going through an energy crisis my friend, think about that and the next time you'll consider turning the lights off

I understand what you mean I can't sleep in the dark not because Iam afraid I just describe it but sleep with the tv on every night if that counts as light. :)

It's normal... in a ten-year-old. This is a phobia, plain and simple, and like any other phobia, it will cause you problems later. You should work on it.

That said, I don't think any less of you for it--we all have our own issues, and even those of us with a merciful lack of phobias can have plenty of other problems.

Totally normal. And besides, you have to have a light on to see whatever's sneaking up on you. :P

    I would say it's pretty normal. I'm 19 too!
I never really thought of why I don't like the dark... but I just don't sleep in it.
Now that I moved in with my boyfriend it has been easier to sleep in the dark.
He gets annoyed when I try to lay down with the light or watch movies with the light on. But that's the way I feel comfortable....

I'm 30 and sleep with a lamp on and the TV. Because my apartment is so big and old, I leave a hall light on near the bathroom too. I have run into a ghost in a dark hall on vacation with my family when I was 16 and I don't want to EVER experience anything like that again if I can help it. Whether or not you believe in things that go bump in the night....if it makes you comfortable, who cares what anybody else thinks. Just get an energy efficient bulb.

it's common but not normal. I do it when i go to hot countries. I realise it started as a child i never use to sleep in the summer as a child because i am scared of insects and very small creature crawling on me when i'm not looking and biting or stinging me.
