Is it normal that i respect terrorists more then soldiers?

To be clear, I don't mean any particular terrorists or any particular country's soldiers. Just in general.

They both kill people obviously, but soldiers kill because they're ordered to, whereas terrorists kill because they believe it's the right thing to do. To me that makes them the more ethical of the two.

is it normal to see it that way?

    hey palestinianguy, is that you?

    ^_^

technically, i agree, but it depends on WHAT the terrorists fight for.
I am not a religious person, so religious terrorists are just maniacs for me.

Also, USUALLY soldiers are more "restrained" and are, except for US+alliance soldiers, usually not targetting civilians.(note the usually...there's always dark chapters).

But all in all, certain types of terrorists, such as liberation fighters or political activists are more "understandable" than soldiers.

LOL, that's not me, and I disagree with the op.

    • Well yeah. I mean before you actually bring the cause into the equation. But all else being equal, someone more who fights for what they believe in is a better person in my eyes, than someone who just fights whoever their government tells them to.

Of course terrorist/soldier labels aren't absolute. I'm sure fighters for some terrorist groups blindly follow their leader. And some precious few soldiers will disobey an order that conflicts with greater values.

So if I believe it's the right thing to do, I can kill people? Neat! Boondock Saints already cashed in on this.

    • Not exactly. But to me, abdicated responsibility for your own actions, as soldiers do, is in itself immoral. So that's on top over whatever other crimes they're guilty of.

Actually, I gotta say, you're statement makes a lot of sense. Honestly, I don't believe in war and killing at all, but I do get what your arguing because if we were looking from the terrorists point of view, it would be a whole nother thing. Good point.

Okay, so basically it's just a matter of free will to you right? Killing people on orders or killing people by your own beliefs. Honestly, I never though of it this way before, but I can't really decide. I think I would still like soldiers more because ALL terrorists kill for their beliefs while not all soldiers follow orders to kill.

So according to your logic, you respect the terrorists behind the 9/11 attacks because they acted on what they believed in- that the US was evil. By your logic, you respect the people who killed over 3,000 innocent people because they thought it was the "right thing to do". I'm so glad that I live in a world where people think that what was done that day was right.

    • I respect them RELATIVE to how much I respect a group of soldiers who killed a similar number of innocent people because they were ordered to. There's a big difference between that and saying I actually respect them.

You could alternatively say I despise them less, if that's more agreeable.

there's too many grey areas in this argument.
1)terrorist is a bit of a broad term, someone who kills people for power and money is also a terrorist not just the religious nutjobs who have their own beliefs an devotion.
    2) Soldiers aren't just robots, i'm sure u'd find tons of reasons why individuals do it.. money (wages), patriotism, some just like shooting guns and running around in army gear, it's not just purely 'cus my govt told me to'.

Either way both sides are going to be indoctrinated by their respective higher powers to believe that their cause is the right one, whether it is or not. sometimes neither is

I respect terrorists more than soldiers and also I understand them more... If you see how your whole family gets killed by US-soldiers you would become a terrorist either =P
