Is it normal that i prefer that they would ask rather than just take?

Where I work I make cookies almost on a daily basis for kids and residents at a nursing home. I happen to be the baker there.

For a while there I let the other co-workers who are the cooks there take cookies without asking. There had been a couple times where about half a dozen would be gone.

So last week I had told them: Hey "I" would appreciate it if you could ask next time, I'm willing to give you one. He said well... everybody steels cookies here. I guess it became a habit there. They are upset and think it's ridiculous to ask and yet I normally offer them cookies when I have extras too.

I make them for the residents and kids and hardly eat them myself.

I do not find it respectful to take something someone had taken the time to make without asking. I would choose not to do it myself.

That sucks when you have steel cookies.

More teeth get broken that way but at least it teaches them a lesson.

It seems they just got into the habit of taking them. It probably doesn't occur to them that they should ask. Is it possible to make extras specifically for the other staff?

    • Yes, I do occasionally. I am normally rather busy baking other items too and have other tasks. I have a feeling the lady that worked before me didn't care to say anything to them about taking the cookies and only minded her own business. She was rather quiet.

Most of these people I work with complain continuously about whatever drama is going on. They also make fun of others. I DO NOT appreciate their behavior. They can be kind to your face and then talk bad behind you. I thought I would take a small step in my own boundaries. I need to step up more too.

I also do understand that this happens everywhere.
