Is it normal that i prefer metal music over any other type of music?

So I love listening to metal music like Megadeth, Immortal, Amon Amarth, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, etc. I also enjoy some of the classic rock like Led Zeppelin, Kiss, Rush, Rainbow, and Queen. That's pretty much the only kind of music I listen. I really can't stand rap/hip hop music, or country, or any of that Justin Beiber or Lady Gaga music. When I was in high school, everyone thought I was weird because all I ever listened to was metal music. Some even went as far as to calling me a devil worshipper because I enjoyed listening to Immortal, Killswitch Engage and Sepultura. While everyone else was listening to Britney Spears or Backstreet Boys. I'm sorry but I could never get into that kind of pop or rap music. They just don't sound all that good to me. Especially rap. Rap music sounds like a bunch of random words being put together in order for it to all rhyme.

While I'm not a metal head, I personally don't care for most of the pop music out there, myself. And don't even get me started on rap. What annoyed me most in high school is that, I'm black, so people automatically expected me to like rap music and when I would tell them I hated it, apparently, I wasn't a REAL black person.

Everyone has their own taste in music and we like what we like and don't like what we don't like. Don't sweat it :)

You know at my job, I met this customer who was also black and she was wearing a Kiss t-shirt. Then we got into this whole conversation about what bands we like. It turned out that she liked exactly the same kind of music I liked, and when I told her about how I'm not into all this new pop music and rap, she immediately agreed. I thought to myself "Finally! An african american who listens to real music!"

you have a very limited music taste ... i was a metalhead as a kid i saw all big metalbands megadeth amon amarth slayer iron maiden judas priest heaven and hell exodus and loads more but when you grow up you start appreciating different shit ... i mean if metal is your thing that's great but don't be an elitist douche and if you think rap music is bad maybe try listening to some classics before you judge ... but i understand you i used to hate evrything but metal too haha check out some hardcore/crossover maybe if you only like heavy shit also if ur into black metal check out emperor i used to really love them ! and if you're not conviced a bout hiphop check out: big l devils son, and some digable planets when i go to a concert i still prefer hardcore/metal for the insensity but in general i listen to everything that isn't shit really (also anthrax did some songs with a hip hop group so yeah just saying )

Just because I don't like the sound of a certain type of music doesn't mean I have limited music taste. Asides from metal music, I also like to listen to blues. I also like listening to Japanese music, you know the kind you would hear in an anime. Also the kind of Japanese music you would hear in a Japanese samurai movie. In fact the musical score performed by the late Akira Ifukube in Terror of Mechagodzilla is what made me fall in love with that movie as well as the entire Godzilla series. But overall I do love metal music. I wish Megadeth would write a song about Godzilla and put that in a future Godzilla movie... that is if they will ever make another Godzilla movie. As far as rap/hip hop goes. I just could never really get into it. I tried to back in middle school because all the other kids were into it, but I just couldn't. It just didn't sound all that good to me. Same goes for r&b and all this pop Justin Beiber type of music.

I listen to everything, I could never stand the idea of the confines of one genre. Perhaps you're being too dismissive? If all you ever listen to is metal, how can you cast accurate judgements on other genre's of music?

I love metal myself. But I listen to all kinds of other stuff, including hip hop. And I can tell you that not all hip hop is just a bunch of random words being put together in order for it to all rhyme. I listen to Atmosphere who are a two piece rap group from Minneapolis. When they tour they tour with a backing band. Slug, the MC is the most honest, sincere and introspective lyricist I have come across over all forms of music. Most of his lyrics come from his journals, but he is also a storyteller. He puts himself in first person perspective in someone else's shoes (ie a homeless man)

I do think that you have to look beyond the mainstream because there are alot of artists out there. Too many people judge a genre by what they hear on the radio but that stuff is just mass marketed, commercialized crap. Music goes far beyond those confines. Don't generalize. My advice would be to keep open minded, musical journeys can be really exciting and liberating.

    Happy listening dude, rock on!

Yeah I hate how people think that metal music is satanic. Look at Black Sabbath with all of their anti-war songs such as war pigs and electric funeral. The name Black Sabbath came from an old horror film named Black Sabbath. The original sabs just wanted to write scary music that would scare everyone.

I personally love metal myself. It's just the stereo types that get me annoyed such as like you mentioned "devil worshippers" and some of the other comments where people expect blacks to litsen to rap (which I think sucks). The only problem with some metal is songs that have depressing and saddening lyrics.
