I often find myself trying to pick the hairs I have at the edge of my nostrils. Also sometimes I find myself picking the eyelashes at the outer edge of my eyes.

Actually, it's not as uncommon as you would think. "Trichotillomania" (also referred to as "trich" or TTM) is a disorder that causes people to pull out the hairs from their scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows, underarms, beard, chest, legs or other parts of the body. Trich is currently known as an "impulse control disorder", and most recently it's being conceived as being part of a family of "Body-focused repetitive behaviors" (BFRBs). Examples of other BFRBs include excessive nail biting, chronic skin picking (Dermatillomania), and biting the insides of the cheeks. Trichotillomania is currently affecting around 2 million American adults over the age of 22. But that is based on the number of people who actually seek treatment, and since this disorder has only been formally recognized since the late 1980's, many people do not even realize it's an actual condition. There is even a grassroots organization, called the Trich Learning Center, dedicated entirely to those suffering from hair pulling and skin picking. You can find them at www.trich.org.
I don't think I do it in public.
And I only pick the long ones, not the very short hairs. Do they too help prevent from catching a virus? Or do they just look ugly if showing out of my nose?
Nose hairs are there for a reason...they help prevent you from catching a virus. Stop.
Its a bad habit, especially the eyelashes one. Plus dosent look to good in public, try to avoid doing it, even when your alone and hopefully you'll grow out of it.
