Meanwhile I'm sure in society at large a few men have committed suicide by not hearing from women about interest, because nothing in the romance department ever went right for them because nobody did anything pro-active.

Men often are not very perceptive when it comes to sensing another person's emotions. Many men don't work that way, you have to be direct. Talk to him, ty to befriend him and if it doesn't work out well, plenty more where that came from.
