Is it normal that i'm tired of people looking down on the south?
I recently went to the American south, and was a bit worried about the usual stuff- I'm a biracial, Liberal Jew, and was convinced that I wouldn't fit in very well. My only prior exposure to the South had been through Seth McFarlane's shows, which generally portrayed the South as still being in the 1800s.
But when I got there, everyone was immensely kind. I went with a bunch of my African-American friends, and not one of the locals batted an eyelid. They treated us all as equals, and supported us like we were family. They didn't once mention religion, and when they did, they were always very conscious of the fact that we might have different beliefs.
If there's one thing that the South can do (that the North can't), it's settle down. Everyone in the South seemed very happy with who they were, and where they were. Now that I'm back home (in Illinois), I've noticed that people here are a lot more competitive/bitter than the people that I met while on my trip. They're neither as welcoming nor as considerate. I'm tired of those people looking down on Southerners. IIN?
