Is it normal that i'm tired of people looking down on the south?

I recently went to the American south, and was a bit worried about the usual stuff- I'm a biracial, Liberal Jew, and was convinced that I wouldn't fit in very well. My only prior exposure to the South had been through Seth McFarlane's shows, which generally portrayed the South as still being in the 1800s.

But when I got there, everyone was immensely kind. I went with a bunch of my African-American friends, and not one of the locals batted an eyelid. They treated us all as equals, and supported us like we were family. They didn't once mention religion, and when they did, they were always very conscious of the fact that we might have different beliefs.

If there's one thing that the South can do (that the North can't), it's settle down. Everyone in the South seemed very happy with who they were, and where they were. Now that I'm back home (in Illinois), I've noticed that people here are a lot more competitive/bitter than the people that I met while on my trip. They're neither as welcoming nor as considerate. I'm tired of those people looking down on Southerners. IIN?

  • The only thing that creeps me out about The South is the amount of fanatical religious folk. That's so scary to me.

It's normal, but I've had bad experiences with the south and there's rednecks to worry about. I know not everyone is a racist prick down there, but I can't shake my worry off:/

Am I the only thought of looking down on the south as literally "looking down on the south" because it's on the bottom.

I like this post but I am biased. We are pretty cool people down here, most of the bad things are just stereotypes. Not that everyone is nice or not racist or not homophobic or not bible thumpers but those people are a very small percent. From what I have seen people in the northeast, and midwest are more racist than here. Not saying it is true, it's just what I have seen in my travels. I honestly can't think of anyone more racist than the white guys I met in Boston.

OP, what part of the south did you visit?

It's the same with the north/south divide in my country. The north is looked down on but it's the north that is friendly, witty, open, and patient. We don't have any religious split or creationist thing; it's just poor versus rich.

As a native Texan, I feel you. I studied abroad with an American school in Athens, Greece, and everyone(not exaggerating, everyone) else in the program was from the North. When I said I was from Texas, they acted shocked that I wasn't a slurring yokel that talked constantly about the horses at mah daddy's ranch, y'all.

And yeah, on the whole, Southern Hospitality can't be beaten. Don't get me wrong, there are a few here and there that will fuss over race or sexuality, but very few will make a public scene thanks to good old social shame. In fact, the people I've gotten into verbal tosses with are the people that come in from other states and suggest things like "I guess your state just isn't intelligent enough to have recycling for cardboard." I'm not overly patriotic or even state-obsessed, but damn. Courtesy shouldn't be limited by region (even if that statement was true, which...it's not).

    Dirty South devoured me.

What did you think we were a bunch of KKK rednecks down here?

More minorities live in the south than the north yo.

Well, you know what they say, right? "The South will rise again".

I'm kidding, but couldn't pass on this joke.

yeah, you're totally right -glad that someone gets it, and I'm not even American.

I agree, however, I don't think it's good to judge the south as a whole based off the one place you went. If you went hitchhiking around and experienced multiple parts of the south, I would say you'd have an unbiased opinion.

Some parts of the south ARE bad. Some very small isolated towns ARE extremely religious. But many big cities aren't.

I live in the midwest and we aren't all farmers, but some of us are. The east coast isn't always laid back, but there are some people that are. People in NYC aren't always rude, but there are some people that are. Stereotypes are stereotypes. There might be some truth to them, but they're too broad to fit everybody.
