Is it normal that i'm terrified to get a colonoscopy?

I'm a 19 year old female and I've been told to get a colonoscopy, and I'm freaked out. I'm considering cancelling it. I do well with anesthesia and expect to be out the whole time, I'm not worried about pain or anything, but I can't handle the fact that I'm going to be completely naked and unconscious. My doctor is a man and he creeps me out a little- he tells me I'm beautiful every time I come in. I'm getting sick thinking about being naked on a table in a room full of people. Is that normal? Should I just cancel it?

  • It's normal to feel some anxiety about it because you are modest. But (no pun intended), really, they've done this procedure hundreds of times before you came along. You don't have anything special they haven't already seen. It's not awkward for them; it's their job and they are completely desensitized to it - they just want to do their work and go home.

I think the most unappealing part of a colonoscopy is the liquid you must drink the night before. It makes you poop out *everything* in your intestinal tract. Be prepared to spend some time on the toilet that night. :)

I'm wondering about your doctor. If he makes you uncomfortable, get a second opinion, and ask to see a female.

Ask for a different doctor to investigate your bum hole.

I'm sorry you have to go through this. I'd be scared too. Couldn't you go see a female doctor? It would be less embarrasing for you. Good luck regardless.

I'd be freaking out too. Good luck sorting that one out, my sympathies.

It's normal to be worried but PLEASE don't decide against having one. Usually, the doctors have an aid with them when the procedure is done. However, if this still doesn't give you comfort, switch doctors and this time get a female.
