Is it normal that i'm freaking out about there being a public shooting

I wouldn't worry too much. Though the media picks the story up EVERY time one happens, public shootings are very rare. Even if you were in a place where a shooter went on a rampage, you would likely be ok. Depending on your state, there are likely to be many concealed carry pedestrians to protect you, and the loss-prevention staff (security) at a major store like Wal-Mart will likely be armed. I personally am a proud gun-owner and can tell you that if a shooting were ever to occur in a store where we were both under fire, I would find it my duty to defend any un-armed citizens from harm. I wouldn't worry about shootings, more people die in auto crashes than in mass-shootings. On the point of you carrying a gun to protect yourself, I'd only advise it if you are willing to train properly and have the moral ability to pull the trigger if need be when the time comes. Gun owning is a serious responsibility, and it shouldn't be taken lightly.

This is why I think college campuses should allow guns. I keep one on me all the time. I dont want to be stuck in a lecture hall with some crazy dude with a chip on his shoulder and an AK without having any defenses of my own.
But it's so rare. It's not really something you should obsess over. Look up statistics on public shootings to calm yourself down.

Thank you, your comments have calmed me more. I hadn't thought of it, but it's true- more people die in auto accidents and I don't worry when I'm driving, so I shouldn't be so worried about a public shooting. Though I'm not 100% comfortable going to school or large stores, I'm now like 90% fine with it :)

I totally agree with you man, just the thought of dying any moment freaks me out. Public shootings are possibly the scariest thing that can happen in a small community
