Is it normal that i'm ashamed of my taste in music?

Okay, so I listen to pop punk, emo (gag I know I'm ashamed), alternative rockish. For example, Paramore, and Panic! at the disco. I have always had a weirdish taste of music. I remember when I was listening to music with my "friends" and we were searching up songs. My friends all searched up pop music while I searched up "I Think I Like You" by Donora. My friends were like -_- dats what you listen to? So ever since, I tried to like bubblegum pop music like 1 Direction and all that crap. Everyone I know is obsessed with music on the radio. (I hate it so much could rant about it but I want to get this past the moderators so I wont) I only know 2 people that like my kind of music. :'( I'm so scared of being judged by listening to this music. I embrace it myself and I'm sure my new friends will embrace it as well but I'm all scared. What if they call me emo? What if they call my taste in music stupid? Music is my life so I don't want this to get in the way.

Is this normal? Has this happened to you? If so please tell me about it int the comments. D':

I don't even turn on the radio anymore, because every station has the same crap playing everyday by the same stupid crappy artists. Thank goodness for Pandora!

It's funny how snobby we can be about music. We all do it and either criticise or laud someone else's tastes. On one hand it's as stupid as saying to someone, "What? You like spinach? You moron! I like cabbage therefore I'm better". On the other hand, if music is treated as art then there are specific judgements people seem to feel it's okay make and these are generally just what is modish rather than a comment on the underlying and universal quality of something.

In short, people are stupid. Listen to what you want.

Why be ashamed of what you listen to? You like. That's all that matters. Be proud of it. It doesn't matter what they thing. I listen to a hell of a lot of Broadway. A lot of people think that makes me a sappy and soft. I don't give a damn. It sounds good. I like it. And I'm damn proud of it!

When I was younger my friends used to tease me saying I loved listening to the sound of a dial-up internet connection, just because I enjoyed some electronic and ambient music.

You sound like you are quite young? Like middle teens? Only because I've found when you get past teenhood you tend to come to terms with your own taste in music. The stuff you were ashamed of you acknowledge as having the potential to cause friends to wrinkle their noses in distaste, but you no longer feel the embarrassment. In fact you might even revel in it.

I have songs by Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Rihanna and Lana Del Rey in my music collection; back in the day when I was an insecure teen I'd have turned rosy cheeked had anybody discovered this - now I don't care, I just listen to what I like. I think you'll get to this point too :)

Good on ya for being a lover of fine music. being ashamed is akin to being ashamed of the sky. I didn't grow up in the 60s but I am addicted to The Band. The only music I don't like is doof doof disco tranze techno Shit (dunno what it's called) and love Aussie rap and the odd opera. is everyone of your age preoccupied with being accepted? Assortment of Cheeses, just politely tell anyone that has a problem with you, "you mustn't've been around when I told everyone else to fark-orff"!

The bands you named are kinda popular so it's not that weird. At least you don't listen to Japanese metal and people don't call you weirdo for "liking slanty eyed screaming".

    • Boris is fucking great. "Japanoise music" is dope also, Merzbow is the king of ear destruction.

The more music I've been hearing from Japan the more I'm impressed by their "alt" scenes.

I don't understand why you'd be judged on that. Paramore and Panic at the Disco are both popular bands. Hardly weird taste. But I think it is normal to be embarrassed about your music, given how much criticism people give over people's taste. If you say you like certain bands (funnily enough the likes of 1 Direction are unpopular here:P) you're bound to get criticised for it.

Even the whole "guilty pleasure" thing. Like you're supposed to be ashamed and feel guilty for what you like. I don't feel the need to share music with people, it's personal to me, and I don't mind what others listen to. I'm not too bothered if they dislike what I listen to either, it's what I like. There isn't one single musician who everyone loves anyway. You can't please everyone.:)

I never liked music that was popular at the time. Granted I was growing up in the 90s so music wasnt terrible but still I got alot of wtf at sleep overs when the majority of my music was mostly from before the 80s although I do like some 80s and 90s too. I tend to think I wouldnt do well as a teen today. Id just rather paint my toenails to the sound of joan biaz then justin bieber. (Or britney spears if you want to insert what was popular when I was 18) wouldnt worry about it too much. Everyone has different tastes your entitled to yours. Good friends shouldnt judge.

Brand New are one of my favourite bands I've only relatively recently discovered. "Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don't" is a my favourite song by them at the moment, but I need to listen to them more extensively. The same goes for Taking Back Sunday; I've been meaning to listen to them for a long time.

I don't know those bands you like. I'd rather have any weird taste then liking the shit on the radio. But nobody should judge anyones taste in music.

Dodongos - you are one insufferably smug douchebag. Do you think that there's a consensus that the Fab Four and Radiohead represent the pinnacle in musical achievement in our time? There are no absolutes in music. Ever heard the phrase "To each his own"?

Oh here we go!!! Now you're disliking my comments because I like Bayside. OP did not mention Bayside but their music is similar to the shit he/she mentioned. Stahp obsessing about Kate Nash. No one says you have to like the same music as anyone else, but don't hate on Bayside just cause they're not her. Why not focus more on serious matters and try to help end those problems like I do? I sign causes that catch my attention. A little help goes a long way.
