Is it normal that i'm against the death penalty for literally anyone?

I don't care if you're Hitler, I don't care if you've killed a million innocent children, I don't care if you blew up a trillion planets. I think the death penalty is wrong period and it actually highly disturbs me something like 70 percent of any given population of people seems to be in favour of it.

What good does revenge do? How can supposedly moral people defend the death penalty in this era? Most people wouldn't murder in cold blood, but the fact most people support the death penalty seems to suggest most people aren't against killing people in all circumstances.

I'm against death penalty.Youre going to murder someone for committing a murder...Doesn't make much sense.

Makes perfect sense to me that if you want to take a life, that your life may be taken as well, so one would have to think about that before doing so. Though I would prefer them to go to prison for life to get raped, beat up, and eat shitty food for the rest of their life and have to live with what they have done.

Why would you directly do the same thing you oppose,as punishment for someone else doing it?

I'm just saying that I see where the government is coming from because that punishment perfectly fits the crime (unlike some crimes/punishments, ie: possessing drugs for personal use, not hurting anyone, but then you can get up to 7 years in prison for a first offense).

It doesn't work as a deterrent, though.

i'm sure there are some people it deters, and it is more of a punishment than a deterrent anyways.

You're all for rehabilitation even if the rates of recidivism are high for
      those particular crimes??

Execution is more expensive than life in prison.

        Comment Hidden ( show )
  • Because killing people doesn't show others that killing is wrong.

I'm not against it for moral reasons, rather because it has failed as a deterrent.

The problem being that most of the cases eligible for the death penalty involve a criminal who doesn't worry about death until after the crime takes place (armed robbery gone wrong, serial killers, sexual homicides).

People like that haven't been put off by the death penalty, so it doesn't work.

  • The death penalty is far from cold-blooded murder. I think we don't execute people for enough reasons. We are already overpopulated and some people just don't deserve to life after what theyve done.

I agree. The OP is kind of interpreting things in the wrong light, it's not so much about revenge as it is from preventing them from killing more people.

    Capital punishment is Unethical.
    Imprisonment is also Unethical.
We must devise a new strategy for those who choose to be socially deviant and / or pose a risk to civilised society.

I'm in two minds about this...
I live in a country without the death penalty, but I believe that murderers deserve to die.

My indecision rests on the following points:
    * Against: They could be put in a prison where they should be made to suffer punishment worse than death. (i.e. conditions so bad that the sole purpose of the guards would be to prevent the prisoners from taking the easy way out by killing themselves)
    * For: Keeping someone in prison for the rest of their life is a massive cost to the state. Our tax money, which could be better spent elsewhere.

I believe the ideal solution lies in a combination of the two:
Murders (and ideally rapists too) should be put in the type of prison mentioned above for a few years (lets say 10) during which they should be forced to work in order to pay off their cost to the state/government, after which they are to be executed.

  • i see non murder crimes getting life imprisonment and i shake my head, what is the incentive to keep the victim alive, the death penalty well i wouldnt care if childkillers were taken out the back and shot, but who will pull the trigger?

I don't know about where you are, but here in Australia, our prisons are like holiday resorts. They get free food, free dental check ups, free medical check ups, are cosy and comfortable in their cells, all at tax payers dollars. So whilst, you're working and struggling to pay bills; someone who abducted, raped and murdered a young woman gets to live all nice and cosy in his cell? Get fucked. Pro death penalty all the way. Give me a gun, I'll put it to his head and pull the trigger, and I would sleep soundly that night as well.

No thats fine don't kill them just half their sentences for good behaviour or let them out early on bail so they can do it again. Yeah thats fucking genius.

Execution is a quick fix, and a quick fix usually isn't a good fix; sometimes it isn't any sort of fix at all.

I'm not saying we're in a good enough position to start rehabilitation on a grand scale yet (we just don't know enough about human behaviour), but it is clear to me that rehabilitation is the ideal, and it makes all the sense in the world to work towards that ideal.

Of course putting a murderer or child molester to death stops future crimes. If they're dead they can't hurt anyone else ever again. (That's not to say that we do the death penalty properly here in the USA. There's much room for improvement.)

  • It's not normal in my eyes.

The man who punishes severely, punishes least. Sometimes to follow love, you have to abandon your affections and do what must be done I'm afraid.

Reasons to support the death penalty:
    1. It's unethical to burden taxpayers with the costs of keeping such individuals incarcerated, especially for 25+ years.
    2. Cutting prison populations down prevents overcrowding.
    3. The world is overpopulated with a massive 7 billion people on the planet and growing - the death penalty may be a drop in the ocean for population control, but we've got to increase the mortality rate where ever we can.
    4. It gives victims and/or their families peace of mind knowing the murderer/sexual offender will never be out on the streets ever again.
    5. It is a fool-proof way to prevent the individual from re-offending.
    6. It is only fair that if you take a life you must pay for it with your own. Imprisoning such an individual is not justice since they person still has their life intact.

The death penalty is a great tool to use for the above reasons, and if the necessary controls are put in place to prevent executing the wrong person it really is a flawless approach to take. The optimal method to use is hanging since rope is cheap and you can re-use it.

Those against it can only justify their opposition based on irrational, emotional, humanistic reasons.

I'm for the death penalty. Revenge tastes sweet :-)
In my bloody country even the worst offenders get freed on parole after 7 years or so. This country is the laughing stock of all the criminals from Africa, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Albania, Czech Republic etc. They all come here to do hit and run robberies in the knowledge that our prisons are over-populated. I say shoot-to-kill. No mercy.

      Okie doke, I'm here.

I most assuredly believe killing is acceptable when your own life depends on it, or even the life of another.
I do think execution in the prison system is flawed- I believe a lot of those who die never commit the crimes in question. If we're to play God, our own justice system needs to be re-evaluated. However, if and when a case comes across profound, impenetrable evidence of cold, heartless, first degree murder- well, it just seems logical to throw away waste.

If the death penalty were applied swiftly, it would be much more economically feasible than keeping some lowlife in prison for the remainder of his life. By swift, I mean take the SOB out and hang his ass as soon as he's convicted like they did in the Old West.
