Is it normal that i'm a girl who absolutely hates romance films?

I'm not saying that all girls like romance films, novels, etc, or should even feel obligated to be interested in them/like them, but I just find it odd that I can't stand them.

Now, don't get me wrong. I have "fangirled" over some romantic things(like when I have a crush on someone, for instance), but it's very rare when I do.

I hate romance movies and novels, and basically anything having to do with such. I honestly have tried to get into them, but I just end up losing interest in them and switch to something else--most often horror movies. I feel that any romantic aspect to a storyline really kills it for me--though, once again I stress that this is not always, just most of the time.

I will admit that I typically like horror movies, scary video-games, and true-life crime stories about serial killers. Once again, I'm not saying that girls are unable to like these things, but it seems the majority of the ones I've met do not. Mind you, I like plenty of other stuff that's cutesy, so I am not just a one-note sort of person.

Personality-wise, I'm a cheerful, shy, and very passive individual and am in no way dark, or disturbed. My imagination, however, is a tad morbid, but I'm sure that to some extent, everyones' is.

So, the question stands: am I really that odd?

Oh, and quick side-note: My father introduced me to horror films when I was young. Perhaps that has something to do with it?

Wow, you are so much like me! You are not odd. Society expect us girls to conform to that stereotypical model. I in general, am uninterested in pure romantic plots. You can throw a bit of romance but usually I do not care for romantic movies/novels unless I'm in that 'I-have-a-crush!' phase. Much like you, I enjoy the pleasure of watching horror movies (more so, laughing like a crazy person in the cinema when the gory stuff freak people out) and I enjoy horror-based video games. You are not alone in this but you should celebrate the fact that you stray from the so called norm.

Also, can we be friends? :)

It's not that I'm completely against romance or anything, though I have always had a somewhat cynical attitude towards it (though, this is only when I'm not in relationship). There have been quite a few romantic things that, on occasion, will make me fangirl like mad, but overall romantic films are just not my thing. They bore me to tears.

Anyways, sure! We can be friends. :D I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who laughs like a mad woman at horror films.

I think it is, considering that it's normal for me, a girl, to hate romance films. :)

You mean there are human beings that actually like romance films?

Your question is sufficient for me, haha. Romance films are very cliché, I'd rather read Creepy-pastas and watch horror films any day.

Some people seem to find it weird that I'm a girl and I've never seen titanic, and I don't really want to either, those kind of movies are boring to me.. But I don't like many horror films either, for the same reason. I really only like comedy, animation, and non-fiction

To be fair most Romantic Movies suck.
But, seriously, you don't have to listen to society; there is not "right way" to be a woman. Some of us will like mushy, romantic things; others will like Horror. We're all different and we all like different things, and that's fine

    Too mushy, I hate 'em.

All normal, Hollywood has been making the same romantic movies for many years. They are all so silly and far from reality, they don't even display real romance. Teddybears and heart are not romantic, inside jokes, small traditions, a couples favourite candy, and personal things are.

They have their cute moments but I'm not a fan either. They seem a little fake to me

I think Hollywood doesn't exactly do romance very well. I was more into very specific romance novels and novelists when I was growing up (not so much movies).

P.s. I hate chick flicks and Sleepless in Seattle was a major snooze-fest, so was When Harry Met Sally.

I also think Jane Austen is boring and overrated.

yeah I'm a girl and I think romance books and movies are boring. There has to be more fantasy or sci-fi in it for me.

I don't care for them either. They usually bore me.

    • Of course you don't care for them. Everything that doesn't involve carpet munching is a deal breaker for you.

  • Well, judging by the fact that most women nowadays hate men and run away from relationships, i think it's pretty common for girls to hate romance.

I can relate to much of what you're saying except for the video games which bore me.

Hell yes that's normal! Romance movies are always boring, and as it turns out, they reduce the satisfaction you get from your own relationships by giving us unrealistic expectations!
