Is it normal that i listen to 60's & 70's music?
I live in Detroit, Michigan and instead of listening to popular tunes that others my age would consider 'cool' (I'm 19 years young), I like so-called 'old music'.
I listen to 50's Jazz (Miles Davis, Donald Byrd, etc.), 60's Blues (Albert King, T-Bone Walker, etc.) and even 70's Soul and Funk (Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, The Dramatics etc.) NOT R&B.
Every time I play my favorite tune "Walk On By" (1969) by Isaac Hayes, my peers look at me in disgust, as if I did something disgusting. But I love the soul orchestra; organ, drums, funky bass, the almighty string section and background vocalists blend together perfectly. The hi-fidelity acoustic recordings back then sound authentic, something I feel is missing in today's music.
Even the rap music I listen to is old. Mobb Deep, Wu-Tang Clan, Ghostface Killah, KRS-One, A Tribe Called Quest, Public Enemy, Kool G Rap, and even Special Ed. Actually, thats where it started. The type of rap I like is heavily Jazz and Soul influenced, unlike new rap today.
And no one my age that I know in person listens to what I listen to. I can't relate to anyone. I feel like I belong in New York, or something...
P.S. I've always wanted to be a music producer, or composer, or DJ, or something, but I know for sure I would have to move out of Michigan.
