Is it normal that i lie about what kind of music i listen to?

Here's the story. I've been listening to alternative as soon as I got my first MP3 player (when I was about 11 years old). Some of my favourite bands are Placebo, The Cure and Sonic Youth. The music they made is kinda creepy, it's all depressing stuff, and I'm ashamed of telling people about that, because I know many people will judge me for it (I myself actually judge people according to the music they listen to). I always lie, I tell them I like artists like Daft Punk, Kings of Leon (I actually do like these artists but it's nowhere near my favourite music)... Is this normal?

    Some people judge and others don't. I actually don't care what other people listen to.

    7. Eric Clapton
    8. Megadeth
    9. The Killers
    10. Sublime

    I have a pretty diverse taste, so I usually just say these bands and the person is bound to know one of them.

    Well people shouldn't judge you on the kind of music you listen to or what you wear or anything. it's the person you are that counts.

    Well, if someone I don't really know or care about asks me what sort of music I like, I always name some well-known bands who I like, but are not my favourites. That way I don't have to explain to them what I'm talking about. If someone who I would call a friend, or I know will understand what I'm talking about because of the way they dress etc., I will name some if my real favourite bands.

        Hmm.. well, if I didn't love you or your screen-name, I would say Green Day, Paramore or Metallica, but that would be a total lie, because I only like a couple of songs from each and I haven't seen any of them live.

        In reality, because I do love you and your screen-name, I'd say Motionless In White, The Wonder Years and Volbeat are the bands I'm really into at the moment, two of whom I have seen live and the other I just missed out on seeing.

    It's weird to lie about your music tastes, why care if your friends approve or not? If people ask me, i say i like rock, metal, dubstep, screamo, altrn, if they ask for band names i'll name a few. i don't care if my friends think im weird, it's stupid to judge someone based on music lol

    Thats so wrong to feel you have to lie.you want to feel bad about what you listen to blast some Disgorge or Fumes Of Decay around your friends.im very honest about what i listen to problem is they couldnt handle it if they were tied up and forced to.and those bands you named so freaking weak why would you be scared to tell that?if you like dark go all out and do it right.

      Well the music I listen to is about suicide, drugs and depression (athough I'm not suicidal or depressed). You're telling me to "go out and do it right", but I'm not going to change my appearance or behaviour according to the music I listen to. I'm a pretty normal guy, I wear normal clothing and go to mainstream clubs because that is my lifestyle. All of my friends are normal and "mainstream", they listen to Coldplay and stuff and only a few of my friend know that I listen to this stuff, they find it weird.

      I hate to lie about it but I'm fine with it at the moment.
