Is it normal that i judge people based on their music taste

I have always thought that it's normal to do this. I believe the taste in music tells a lot about people in general, the way they think, the way the see the world and everything around them.
Being a fan of underground music i appreciate original music no matter the genre. As long as it's original i respect it, even if i don't like it that much. I rarely listen to mainstream stuff but i won't say no to a good song. But I tend to get along better with people who enjoy a wide range of music , rather than with people who listen to a specific genre.
Sometimes i feel really narrow minded when other people tell me they listen to all that mainstream crap, because i immediately start having prejudices against them and i am thinking maybe i am judging them too hard.
It's just that i strongly believe there is a deep connection between music and the way you think or act.
So, is that even normal or am i being unfair?

Thats no basis to judge anyone. I listen to underground hip hop, uk punk, electro pop, classic rock, blues and hell even some country or classical. I'm glad I have diversity in what I listen to because you gotta change it up now and then

I almost feel like I wrote this post. I do the exact same thing. It makes a lot of sense to me though I really do try to avoid judging the person completely. The music someone listens to does tell a hell of a lot about them. I think you are definitely normal.

Well I'm reading the comments, and I'm guessing quite a lot of people aren't understanding what this person is talking about.

Just know this OP, that the people you judge for listening to mainstream crap are probably judging you right back as a pretentious douche bag or whatever is the popular way of expressing disdain for elitists these days. It will probably be more your loss than theirs at least statistically speaking because there are more of them than you.

I'm not trying to attack you in any way but rather trying to be a realist. Also I'm wondering from where this taste for elitism in choice and music genre came.

If I were a gambling woman I'd be willing to bet that you're a young adult who might associate music taste with social cliques, perhaps from adolescence. I can sympathize with such a struggle on certain levels. I'm a Generation Xer chick; an 80's girl and I can well remember listening to post punk/new wave music that many people had never heard of and catching shit from trendy mainstream people for my music taste and personal fashion sense. Then time would pass and one of favorite bands would get a huge hit on the pop charts and lots of radio air play. I would go the band's concert and there I would see, sporting a brand new concert shirt, many of the same preppies and jocks who had previously made fun of my massively awesome new wave hairdo and clothes. I was happy for the group's success on one level yet disgusted with all the trendy assholes. It somehow all seemed unfair.

Sound familiar? If not then I apologize for any percieved presumptions on my part. But if anything I've shared rings true then congratulations you're cutting edge and this can be both a blessing and a curse. Try not to lump all the mainstream types into one pulsating blob of mass conformity. Maybe someday you could work in the industry or something. You have a gift, make the best of it.

This is why I'm afraid to express my taste in music, even though it's quite common, eccentric and varied. I knew people like you were out there.

"Duh, you're so lame. You're listening to the wrong noises. You should like these noises instead." Hmmm... that doesn't seem normal to me.

Unfortunately, I believe it is too optimistic to say that one shouldn't judge someone ever in life, at all, as if one can really achieve that truthfully. As for music, I respect the fact that other people have different tastes and realize that music is music no matter what it is. That doesn't mean that I won't dislike a good portion of mainstream music because it doesn't do it for me. I'll listen to someone's recommendation via link but when someone asks me if I've heard BlahBlah's new song, I tell them no and what do I get? "You haven't heard BlahBlah's song? Where have you been?" Oh I don't know, listening to my own music? It takes more than a drumset, electric guitar and vocalist to get me interested unless said setup has a lot of melody.

Just to note though, when I disagree with someone's music, thats all it is. I don't go overboard and think they are less than human, that would be wrong and as long OP doesn't do that, I don't see a problem.

What a shame. There must be quite a few people out there who don't pass your judgement that might be really interesting and exciting to know. Your loss.

  • I think there's a GENERAL relation between peoples music choice and behavior, but that is certainly not true with everyone. Heck, I like music from just about every genre out there lol

If you heard me listening to "Strange Comfort" by the Color Morale, you might judge me one way. But then the next moment I'll listen to "I'll make a man out of you" from the Mulan soundtrack and your judgement is completely invalid.

So I suppose, overall, you could form a general idea about someone's personality by their music. However, remember that people are much more complex than that.

I only judge people if they listen to pop music. By that I can tell if they're social trash or not.

I judge people who listen to Pop music as small brained. Pop music is worse than rap.

Guys, i suspect there has been a misunderstanding here. I am not saying i despise others because of their music taste. I am also not saying that i make fun of them or anything related to that. I do show respect to everyone but i do show more respect to people who appreciate original music.
I don't mind whatever you guys like listening to, but being a fan fan of Lil Wayne (and labeling this as hip hop) for example is something i can't really accept. And i am saying this only because i believe that there is a connection between your musical preferences and your way of thinking. Seriously, am i odd?
I am not a music snob, nor pretentious or anything. It's just that i prefer when people come in contact with various music genres. This way they can actually choose what they like and what not, unlike others who enjoy only the music that plays on tv or radio, because this is the only kind of music they have ever listened to.

People are certainly going overboard with their comments indeed. People are acting like they haven't judged in their entire lives and judging doesn't mean something so heavy as hating someone's existence, it could be something as simple as guessing what type of person they are. If I hear someone listening to old school rap, the ones with feeling and great lyrics, I will think they are a deep thinker. If someone listens to music about hurting people and how they are God's gift to women, then I will judge them negatively. If someone listens to overly sad music all the time, I will believe they are a person with a depressing outlook on life. These thoughts are usually accurate. Music is stronger than people give it credit for and those who explore more options will find a wider range of expression and possible interests.

Most people don't know how to get their hands on that stuff. I am always keeping an ear open for original rock music, but most of the Indie crap produced today sounds like, well crap. I don't have time for this befriending search. I find myself sticking mostly to 90's grunge and alternative, although i have managed to find a few good underground bands.
