Is it normal that i hear voices at night when i'm trying to sleep?

I like to sleep with a fan on, because I like the white noise and because my room sometimes gets really hot.

Although some nights when I'm trying to fall asleep, I'll hear a conversation start up between two people. I can't even distinguish what they're talking about, but I can always hear two distinct voices. Sometimes I'll also hear music, or what sounds like someone narrating something (Like a TV was left on, or a radio)

These voices will sound so real to me, that I think that someone in my house is awake, so I'll get out of bed to see who it is. But every single time, as soon as I sit up in bed and go to turn on the light, the voices stop. Then when I go to lay back down and close my eyes, the voices will start back up again. This prevents me from sleeping sometimes because I keep thinking I'm hearing someone.

This doesn't happen every single night. Sometimes I can fall asleep without hearing anything.

My house is not haunted, it's a brand new house, and there's no other activity to suggest a haunting.

ok I have the same thing, tracked it down and it was the aquarium. Then started to hear it in other sounds. Saw a DR. and its completely normal. Its called hypnogogic hallucinations. Its your brain between asleep and awake.

I sometimes hear voices shout at me as I fall asleep. They say things like, "you're not looking in the right place" or "it isn't time yet" or "it's okay, this is the way it is supposed to be." It doesn't scare me as they are usually reassuring.

My suggestion for you is to not focus on them. If it gets really difficult to tune it out, play ambient music instead of the fan.

This may have typos, I am not paying attention.

This happens to me as well and it has for years.

My husband never experienced this until he was married to me and we started living together. I have experienced this almost my whole life.
I was told by a very reputable clairvoyant that some people have the 6th sense they just dont understand it. She told me that I can learn how to control it so I would stop hearing the voices or at least understand them. I have recently told the noises to shut up, but it didnt work. I have slept with a fan on since I was a kid. Now that I am older and know that I am not crazy that it is simply a part of life, that some of us experience and some dont.
You are right, Yandaman, that spirts can follow you. Some of them are your guides and some feel as though you have something that can help them.
My suggestion to anyone who experiences this that you take a lesson in clairvoyance. Sometimes local claivoyants will offer this. You can pick up a good book that will help you understand it more. As you understand it you will be able to choose when to hear it. These voices and be helpful, from what I am told.
I am just in the beggining stages of understanding it.
Good luck to those who choose to do the same.
    Wishing you the best!!!

maybe part of ur brain is going into sleep mode before the rest. thous it generate think "conversation" which they say dreams are shaped by everything that happend in ur day, maybe ur brain is replaying conversations u heard earlier that day.

Idk or i could be pulling crap out of my ass, but i heard it before too, but i'ved to be able to tune most annoying things out, like dumb ppl

    xD

Maybe try falling asleep in a different place to prove that is nothing environmental (next door neighbours, radio on quiet, ect...).

If you hear the voices where ever you go then you can assume that it has something to do with you.

It is possible to have audio and visual hallucinations when falling to sleep and waking up. These are called hypnopompic hallucinations.

I sometimes wake up and see stuff from my dream (big spider, suited man and stuff like that) but they disappear quickly. I have never heard voices before but I wouldn't worry too much.

If it really bothers you then see someone about it.

    This happens to me too.

Last year, I thought for sure the place was haunted. I've been living here for a good 4-5 years and I had not experienced anything so freaky until then- hearing mumbled voices downstairs and heavy breathing beside me!

However, after September it stopped. And then it went back on again this past May.
I was freaking out just a minute ago, but then after reading this, it's the fan. My folks turn on the a/c fan every night during the summer. When it boots itself back, the voices stop.

With my paranoid and young brain, it's hard to accept the fact that it's a simple nightly hallucination, but that's all it is. There is also a thing I searched up called the Ganzfeld experiment, where people can hear voices through the white noise.

I suggest ambient binaural beats, relaxing the mind with positivity, and living a "healthy" lifestyle. I know that sounds like bullcrap, but my current unhealthy negative lifestyle sure isn't doing anything.

I sleep with the fan on and I here this too! At first I thought I was crazy... but when my boyfriend speant the night he heard the voices too! He's like "Sshh.. be quiet, can you here that? Someone is talking". I shut the fan off, went to see who is still awake and the voices stop.. well until I get back in bed. Sure thing, everybody is sound asleep. So does anybody know what is going on? Its strange.. I know.

I posted this on Facebook back in 2011. Its great to hear from others that I'm not the only one. Ive had other people who have stayed the night at my house hear the same thing. I'm used to it, but it freaks everyone else out. i also sleep with a box fan and an air purifier.

    Ricks house is haunted
Ok . Ive now owned my house for almost 2yrs now . In the later hours of the evening as I am starting to fall asleep . I hear adult type party voices coming from the front part of my basement . My thought was always that I was tired and it was my mind unwinding from the day .. I was just told that others have heard the same voices in my house ... Which now proves something .. 1. I'm still crazy .. 2. There're ghosts / spirits in my house .. since they are friendly and just partying in the basement i have no reason to be alarmed . Don't drink my Peroni and we be just fine ..

I also have this... Its started a few months ago with me hearing really load (I mean really loud) bangs as I fell to sleep, then I started hearing someone shouting oi as I was falling to sleep. Then about 2 weeks ago I was woken up to 2 people having a conversation in my bedroom that I couldn't quite make out. It sounded fast and excited then something sat on the bed. I looked around and there was no one there! I have had this twice now. I have no mental illness but I have seen people in my room since i was a child. My dog often also stands over me growling at something in the room that I cant see.

Very strange and a little scary now x

I had this problem for years and have fixed it I think..... I seemed to have stopped the talking fan by deleting all the media entries named "radio" in the registry of my laptop.
It doesn't explain some things such as..
    1) When my daughter came in from work it would always start. I think her iPhone was it. When she left it would not always stop. Sometimes would continue for days.
    2) The registry entries said "analog Radio" and I heard channel 4 news distinctly. Along with talk, music, preaching etc.
A month ago U-Verse lost all power over a couple of states. It was at that time I heard the silence and normal hum of the fan. This helped in understanding the source.
I kept deleting Bluetooth entries but they would return on next boot. It has been 48 hours of quiet since deleting "radio".
If anyone should stumble on this later give this a try if you don't care about media center. Delete all radio entries but NOT the radio Buttons for IE explorer and Windows Explorer. They say Type=Radio.
I am glad for now at least, it is quiet in our house! Please export each reg. entry before deleting, just in case.

One day , after two friends came over , I heard them talk like we did . One talking about texts , the other laughing . I would day in my head , shut up , let me sleep . And one would get angry . If I go downstairs and back up then it stops . I cried from frustration that I couldn't get them to stop . Later on I heard someone else. I don't remember who do... just now I've been hearing a fictional character that I've been reading about all day talk about his website (that he doesn't have) . Came Down stairs for an hour and I'm going to go back to sleep now . It's really annoying but afterwards it's quite in treating thinking back ... I will research this more and maybe give an answer here ? I don't have a fan in my room . The first time , I heard them until 1 or 2 , this time I stayed up till 4 .

I pretty sure that I'm just half asleep half awake . Hearing the dream , but not seeing it . I heard being half asleep half awake could be pretty weird .
    Did this help ?

One thing I will say that has been helpful and comforting to me at times to me is actually to tune into the experiences rather than shutting them out. I am not saying this in any sort of delusional way, and do not start convincing yourself that you receive any special messages or anything like that, just think of it as part of yourself talking to yourself. Basically, the things that are said, to me at least, are somehow, metaphorically related to myself or my life. Obviously, I would not suggest telling anyone other than family members about this because essentially people often associate any sort of voice hearing with utter insanity. However, I experience this extremely frequently and function quite well. Basically, this happens to me and in much more intensity than what you described nearly every single night except I have accepted the "unreality" of my experiences though arguably one could say that are experiences are "real" because what is real anyways? If something is created by the mind does that make it any less real? I would suggest that you simply accept the unreality of these experiences, tune into understanding what is being said to you by your own mind, and try to integrate these experiences into your life in a positive, meaningful way. This is what I have done and it has ultimately been a good thing for me in a number of ways to become tuned into my unconscious mind

I hear them at night too, just don't let them keep u up. they inspire me and are fucking awesome and I do not need help, I have a natural source of inspiration that most ppl don't. so I consider that a good thing and u should 2

This used to happen to me basically constantly. Actually, it still happens to me a good bit. It's normal trust me. I do very well in school (4.0 average) and am actually very popular at my school (senior in college). It happened to me for years not every night but every now and then, actually since I was 9 or 10, and has never bothered me or caused me any issues. As long as you can grasp the idea that its just part of you talking to yourself before you drift off and the things said are metaphorical statements about your life and stuff its actually a good thing rather than a problem.

Great! I've been going thru this a while I moved 4x's then realize it's not the place haunted it's something trying to reach out to me. However, I'm no longer afraid. I believe it's just something spiritual and If that's the what God wants for me I want it too.

      Comment Hidden ( show )
  • trishac

YES! And it's not always an aquarium or your neighbor's TV. What you are experiencing may surprise you, or maybe not. Ih ave a feeling it's the later. I believe that you are having a spiritual experiencing (and I think you already knew this).
When we go to sleep, our subconscious allows us to "open up" to dimensions, a parallel universe, or win layman's terms, "The Other SIde".
I don't believe you are always hearing conversations from the highest realm, on the contrary. What you may be experiencing (hearing) are passed-on spirits caught in a vortex between our world and what I call Heaven. Many people are trapped in life. They have made wrong choices, hurt others, etc. and are too afraid to be with God so they stay in a flux mode which many call spirits or ghosts. Think about it, if you murdered someone during your life, wouldn't you be hesitant to have "the talk" with God about what you did in your life? Talk about having to "meet your maker - uncomfortable moment!)
SO, to sum this up: you are spiritually sensitive. Probably more than 99% of most people (even though spiritual awakening is possible for all mankind, very few are born with the gift of having a step ahead and being so sensitive to spirit. I live with this myself and if I want it to stop I imagine a door, open, floating above my head and then I picture it closing. By doing this a few times, I think you will notice a difference quite quickly she it comes to your "Night Gossipers".
Oh, #1. Your house is probably not haunted. You are just sensitive and can hear what'a happening in a parallel universe (Heaven, The Other Side, etc.) . Remember, when we are falling asleep we open ourselves up. We don't mean to, but it can't be helped.
You may want to read some books about this phenomena, I really think a good book will answer all your questions.
    Blessings,
    trisha

What trisha has to say is the most helpful and intelligent. I have been visited by energies for most of my life, and it can really confuse you. I have been a sensitive since I can remember, but not until I was spiritually possessed by a dark energy did I understand that how I live in reality, affects the energy that seeks me. I believe that the white noise from the fan is actually dividing the wavelengths like a clock ticks off seconds. Every rotation of the blade allows a small electro-magnetic charge, which is the tick that allows our reality to mesh with "the other side" as trisha says. The ability to hear this energy is a gift. You may understand what you hear, but most likely the pattern of audible sound will be too fast for our sound spectrum. For many years I kept this ability secret from everyone. I became obsessed with the occult, thinking that understanding why this happens to me will solve the problems of the spirits that are stuck.

Most Important Truth I Have Lived: I don't care if you believe me or not, but if any of this resonates with you then I hope this helps, but the occult and the ability are complete opposites from each other. Trying to bring conscious sentient entities to fruition is always dangerous because opening doorways and allowing contact can destroy individuals, and at worst entire families. I thought that ghost shows, you tube clips, and dismissing my faith because "what did GOD ever do for me" was just human interest that everyone lived like. I was completely deceived. The first strike was the nightmares. I am giving them the name nightmares only because its the only word for these sub-conscience films, but it doesn't come close to the horror I lived every time I slept for 3 months. Each time I went to sleep I went directly back into the vision from the night before. Even if I stayed up for days at a time, the instant I hit REM I was right where the nightmare left off. At times I didn't know if reality was real. It seemed that the insanity of my neurons and synapses was more tangible than food or water. This led me to try and escape my terror with a common occurring vice throughout my early adulthood, which was narcotics. Believe me this completely exacerbated my insanity, but I actually felt more centered due to the process of obtaining, consuming, and torture of cocaine. Paranoia was a side kick, but the heightened id, ego, and superego, along with my dream cycle becoming a running movie, I was divinely rewarded an alternate reality. I witnessed physical violence from at least 5 human looking souls on me as I laid in my bed. Kicking, spitting, swearing, and at a speed that was unnatural. They had human form but looked like negatives from a celluloid photo. I am sure anyone that is reading this will dismiss what I am saying because of the admission of drugs, but the brain firing at full electrical storm is unique. This happened to me seven times in 2011 and I had been using cocaine and alcohol since 2002. I am not proud of this but all of this is my cross to carry.
The last time I was possessed by an entity that I saw two weeks before creeping from around my curtains in my room. I don't remember much but I became another person, to the point that I was brought to a medium to be delivered from this evil. It took an hour but Archangel Gabriel defeated the demon and my soul was won back.
I am sure most of you have gone to another site or doubt what I type, but this is the first time I have shared this with anyone besides my mother and the one who helped bring me back from hell.
To return back to the voices, I still hear them on a consistent basis, but they are only audible for the sake of being acknowledged. If you hear them then you have heard them for a long time. Most of the time your REM dream cycle will help them cross to the other side, just ask your angels to help the souls you feel move on, and they will every time. You can ask your angels for anything. They around everyone and are present to help in any situation.

this happens to me as well. As im falling asleep i will hear really loud noises and i will wake up startled or i will hear a conversation going and my room stays quiet when i goto bed so it isn't the t.v. Last night it happened probably around 2 in the morning and it was storming. I'm not scared of storms one bit but i was woke up by the thunder because it sounded as if it was in my ear and it scared me so badly that i was shaking and nearly in tears. Then after the thunder quit i heard a conversation between two people in my head, im not sure what they were saying, i cant remember. i ignored it because i thought i was dreaming but i could tell that i was awake. After that, i heard a voice talking to me and im not sure if it was a female or a male and i dont remember what it told me but it sounded interesting and i tried to talk back to it but i felt as if i was in trouble and it was going to hurt me because i talked back. My house is not haunted because we built it, and im a healthy person, im very young to experience this in my opinion.. everyone thinks im crazy so i just stopped telling people about it.

that is definetley the work of the supernatural realm... My grandfather used to do it to me when i was younger after i had fallen asleep.. he used to strike up conversations with other spirits..

The key: is to get a little more interested.. say íf you got something to say say it a little louder or shut the fuck up...!!!'you will very quickly realise what it is your dealing with.. I think its prob spirits that have or are following you around wherever you go.. thats why the house may not seem haunted..

Interesting... Two distinct voices having a conversation, but only at night when you are trying to go to sleep. Do you ever hear them at other times? How long has this been going on? Are you under a lot of stress right now? Are you conflicted over something in your life that you haven't been able to resolve? Do you have any history of mental health issues, past or present? Has someone close to you recently died? Does anyone else hear these voices?
