Is it normal that i hear things that aren't there?

Please understand that this is a legitimate post and I've talked to very few people about this. I'm an alcoholic (2+ years) 20 year old female and for the past year or so, I've been hearing things at random and definable periods of time. These things range from loud and realistic voices that criticize me to repeating "audio files" of sound effects. This usually happens in the mornings after heavily drinking. Is it normal to experience this from alcohol dependency, or should I consider schizophrenia? I keep thinking that at my age I may be developing it, but I can't tell if it's that or the drinking.

  • The best way to tell is stop drinking and see if it goes away.

Perhaps lack of quality of sleep due to the high alcohol consumption, especially if you are male.

Hey, I'm in a similar situation to you (21, alcoholic) and I've been experiencing similar things and wondering about it myself. I often hear conversations and voices that aren't there, particularly after heavy drinking periods (the morning after, or at night when everything else is quiet). I also get the occasional visual hallucination, nothing to visceral, but definite warping and colours and stuff. Anyway, auditory hallucinations are certainly a symptom of alcoholism, and I'm pretty sure that's what it is rather than the onset of schizophrenia. However, alcohol abuse, particularly at our age, has been linked to the triggering of schizophrenia-like symptoms.

I know what a stupid and hypocritical thing it is to say, since I haven't been able to do it myself, but it's definitely worth cutting back on the drinking. Not cold turkey, 'cos that'll make you feel a lot worse, but maybe having one or two less drinks a night than you would otherwise. When I was on the wagon and managed to cut back a fair amount, I definitely felt better for it, and the hallucinations disappeared. So if you can find someone to help you do that, I honestly think it would help. It's what I'm gonna try and do. Best of luck!

Well, obviously hearing voices isn't "normal" in the sense that the vast majority of people do not experience it. However, it doesn't always mean your insane if you do. Since this is a fully anonymous place, I can say that I do experience it and have quite a bit over the years but I am actually quite a stable and "sane" person except for this. There is a sizable portion of people who experience this sort of thing, yet are not mentally unwell at all. Maybe they are criticizing you for drinking so much. One time I actually heard a voice telling me to not do drugs anymore. Think of it as a sort of inner guidance rather than insanity. Thinking of it as insanity often turns things ugly.

I experience the same thing, but the different is that I'm a minor and a non-alchoholic. I think It's because my lack of sleep lately (I just don't get tired anymore. Maybe I'm developing insomnia?). Not sure, though.

When I try to go sleep (TRY), I think someone is pressing the buttons on the TV, but nobody is there. At school, I might hear footsteps or conversations behind me even though the hallway is empty. In the school bathroom, too. I think the sink was left on, but it is off when I turn around. Sometimes, when I'm reading, I'll hear a dog barking, but I remember I don't have a dog (neither do the neighbors).

It's weird, but I deal with it.

I believe it's due to your alcohol consumption. Please, please quit drinking and stop ruining your life. You're young and you could do better things with your life. Wish you all the best.

I don't think it's just the drinking. You really should talk to a doctor about it.

And this is probably irrelevant, but cigarettes go hand in hand with both alcoholism and schizophrenia - it doesn't mean they cause either - but still maybe consider giving them up (if you smoke).
    Look after yourself.
