Is it normal that i have "people" in my head?

So I hear voices in my head. They're not necessarily "bad". They don't tell me what to do or anything. It's sort of like having a best friend in your head. I have two different voices that are not my own thoughts. One is named Leah (pronounced: Lee-ah. She hates it when someone says Lay-ah) and the other is named Olive. I named them myself and they have personalities. Leah is a bit of a slut. Olive is a rap princess rockstar chick. Is this normal to have "people" in your head?

As long you understand they are not real and you are the creator and don't cause any trouble for your self and others then do whatever makes you happy infact, if the above are the case you don't have to go to the doctor.

Don't listen to these jackasses who are telling you you're schizophrenic. You clearly specified that they're just characters you made up and they don't try to control your life.
I do the same thing. I have a friend named Lilly, who I often think of as my conscience. Other times she's just a friend. And she hasn't told me to kill anyone so far. ;)

Well, you're only crazy if you didn't intend for them to be there. But if you're just making up characters like a writer would, and imagining the types of things that they would say...then your not necessarily crazy, maybe your just incredibly bored.

everyone talks to themselves and sometimes in different 'personalities'/ways, you just seem to have taken it a step farther to give them names. It's perfectly normal, but i'd say not normal to think that these people 'are not your own thoughts,' and think of them as separate entities.

  • Well, no but I do too. I hope you're telling the truth cuz I'm abouts to tell you about the people in my head.

One is a little girl, I call her Alice. She's sweet and she always wants to play with me.

Another is a lady. She's always crying, always so sad. She whistled me to sleep once.

Lastly there is a man. He is around my age and is always either angry or acting immature.

It's not really normal, no. Could be MPD (multiple personality disorder). I sort of have the same situation, but my "voices" are my own, just... they have their own personalities. One is very cruel, jokes about things I fear (i.e.. "there's a spider right beside you!" when there's not), and is just negative in general and is abusive. The other one is very nice, supportive and helpful.

They're my own voices, and they're not real people. I know that. Just like you know (or at least you should) that the two in your head are your own creations, even if you did it subconsciously and don't recall doing so.

It may be fun, but my brain is just to powerful and controlling to allow thoughts that are not my own.

  • I have an inner monologue that is so strong it prevents external ones from taking place correctly.

When I'm talking to someone I hear them and reply, but it's not attached to my inner monologue.

So all my conversations are one sided, with the other persons opinion meaning nothing to me.

People seem like one dimensional cartoons. This is how people in the narcissistic/antisocial/psychopathic/dissocial spectrum mostly think, and how they see others.

I have this to quite a severe extent, it even shows in my postings.

    Does it apply to you?

I don't want to be unkind, but let's call a spade a spade: you have schizophrenia. Please talk to a GP real soon and he will refer you to someone who can help. The medication these days for schizophrenia is much better with less side effects and many people with mild schizophrenia can live productive lives.
That said, if the voices aren't bothering you, I don't see the problem. However, often they start out benign but eventually become bothersome, stressful and much worse. Better to see a doctor now than to wait and see what happens. Don't worry - you're not alone. SO many people have mental illness.

    • I mean it could be schizophrenia, that would make sense, or it could be a differently nuanced personality disorder causing the ego to split.

Either way its not normal and help would be advisable if OP's quality of life is diminished.

Multiple personality disorder. And thanks for telling us Leah doesn't like her name pronounced "lay ah". I'm sure that happens all the time when other people are talking to her oh wait
