Is it normal that i have made up people in my head?

Growing up I didn't really have that many friends and now I'm in university and I'm more lonely than ever. I recently broke up with my first ever boyfriend and felt damaged. I have always had this characters in my head that I talk to and pretend to be them. I talk to myself and answer the phone as if I'm talking to someone. I'm worried!

It should be normal. It's the basis of empathy.

If we don't learn empathy and to behave as citizens of Planet Earth rather than whatever area we happened to be born within, then we're all basically fucked...

    ...so good on ya.

I actually kind of do this too.. Sometimes I don't know who I am talking to (usually in my head not out loud)/pretending to be but I am usually looking after a child or 'being' that child.. It's probably not normal but at least we're not the only one.. Right?

    Yikes, that's slippery slope.
I get the elaborate fantasy world aspect of childhood alienation and managed to channel mine into being able to build intricate devices and run them through scenarios and testing which mimics the physics of everything I've ever seen well enough that when the inventions work in there... they almost invariably work out here in meat-space.

You should read a bit on Nichola Tesla's imaginary people and places.

It's ok to play around in your head like that, but you have to be careful or the dream-scape will become more real for you than your own life, at which point... well, from what I've seen, you don't come fully back.

Try to work on making at least one good friend to anchor you and give you something other than studies to keep you grounded in reality.

    Best of luck to you.
