Is it normal that i hate when wait staff ask "how is everything?"

I know that they are prob trained to do this but I can't stand when I'm enjoying a meal and the staff disrupt my meal to check up on me. I hate having to answer great with my mouth full of food. It's okay if they ask once, but it's usually asked multiple times by various people. Please just let me eat in peace.

  • Yeah - just caused they're trained to say & do that and other cliches lines, doesn't mean it isn't rude, affected and overly familiar. It is.

A good waiter in a decent restaurant will be observant and attentive without being intrusive.

It's apart of their job and they could probably get fired if they didn't ask. It's normal that you hate, I hate it too. Asking once is somewhat irritating but I absolutely hate when they repeatedly ask. It would be nice if they left their customers to their own devices.

I just nod my head or give a thumbs up if I have food in my mouth. I actually like when they ask, I usually only get asked once or twice once I get my food until I get my check. They do come and give refills per need but don't ask the question during that trip. So, I've not really had this problem and have not really dealt with an intrusive wait staff. I guess I've been lucky.

I hate when they say "no problem" when you thank them. Like, no shit it better not be a problem since I'm paying you and it's your job.

i hate hate hate obtrusive waitstaff, at least they dont try to be your best friend and try to make conversation with you (happens to me all the time). sometimes the "how is everything" is neccessary because i do need extra salt, extra hot chili flakes, and extra other shit, if i'm eating at an american restaurant, as american food tastes like paper bags

Half you guys sound like the type of guests who treat their waiters like their own personal servants. I waited tables for years and know your type well. Waiters will handle five tables at the same time, sometimes more. They are juggling a million things, timing everything, and you should be glad they have managed to get everything right. The least you can do is say, "yes! Thanks a lot!"

  • Dine at a more expensive, classier restaurant and you won't have a problem, or at least you shouldn't.

Actually, a more expensive restaurant will get you more waiter attention.

      • No, no. I believe Ollieo is correct when he wrote: "A good waiter in a decent restaurant will be observant and attentive without being intrusive." I've experienced the difference first hand and it's true. Maybe the "expensive" restaurants you went to were not that classy.

It's normal they ask and it's normal u hate it. I don't like it either especially when it seems like they do it more than once. Sometimes instead of answering them when I have a mouth full I just give them the thumbs up, they get the message

They are trained to do it. Where I work there's an actual flow chart on how to exactly handle a table.
