The only thing Thomas Edison pioneered was douchebaggery! And quite a few of Nicholas Telsa's ideas...

Yes its normal Thomas Edison was a real cunt. He disputed alternating current and stopped us from having free electricity. Nichola Tesla was the man he should have hooked edison up to high voltage and fried the fucker

I'm not sure if I will stand by Tesla's free wireless electricity scheme. I know he plug got pulled on the project and he never got to finish it, but if there was a solid backing to it, why would SOMEBODY not have re-worked that idea by now. How many of the worlds problems would be solved by this?!

The only reason I could think of, is that it is impossible to meter and charge for, but still. Why wouldn't a private party with a lot of financial backing do it?

It all comes down to greed when Westinghouse and his band of morons realised you could charge big money they took over and destroyed Teslas electric generator and discredited him. Its the same reason were driving petrol cars today and not electric which existed first and the same reason were eating cancer causing meats and not food based plants like we should

I agree with you on how everything happened, and the reasoning behind it. The only issue I have is, would Tesla's facility really have provided the whole world with free wireless electricity?

of course, he's a douchebag. The real genius behind almost EVERYTHING is Nicola Tesla. All Hail the real scientist!

Yeah, and he patented other people's ideas as his own, despite knowing little about how the things he "invented" actually worked. What he'd really done is patented minor improvements and got himself associated with the whole deal.

Then he filmed an elephant being electrocuted and released it as entertainment but which was actually propaganda to try and destroy his competitor's business (he put forward that Tesla's AC was dangerous and what better way to demonstrate it than with a six thousand volt execution bearing no similarity to a mains electric supply).

    All-round rotter!

Like I said below... read up on Tesla and you soon realize Edison was a bit of a prick.

Granted I think Tesla was a bit insane... but insanity and genius often go hand in hand =)

The BBC is a bit obsessed with the relationship between Edison and Tesla. There was a documentary about Tesla years ago and I've seen at least two others since, including one just last month. None of the documentaries pulls any punches about Edison and what he did.

I don't care for Edison at all, but Tesla is a bit of a hero of mine. He's a true man of science who was treated appallingly for his scientific vision (which was at odds with money-making). In the scientific community, it's Tesla who has the SI unit named after him. Edison gets nothing; not even scant regard. Tesla did go a bit wacky at the end, his legacy speaks louder than anything. :)

No surprise here. Edison was a bitch really.

He hired Tesla and then refused to pay him for his work.

Cos believe me I'm not saying "insane" like it's a bad thing. I think Tesla's fucking fascinating. :-)

Everyone should read that. I knew 90% of it but, even as a Tesla admirer, I learned something new.

You know Tesla's experiment to light bulbs at a distance? It's that one thing more than anything else that's always stunned me. The BBC documentary explained how he did it but even these days they could only get it working over a short range; a few metres or so. Tesla was 26 miles away from the lightbulbs. And he lit them. With no power cables. The guy was a genius.

              yep. magnetic induction.

some power companies tried to sue someone for doing it under their power lines. they tried to say he was "stealing" electricity.

however since he was only using the magnetic induction they were just throwing away they lost the suit

It's OK. If you read up on Tesla you'll see that Edison really DID have an ego problem.
