Is it normal that i hate the uk?

I came to the UK to study thinking this would be a great opportunity to spend some time in another country (I'm from Sweden) getting to know people and new cultures.

I have been here for three years now and yet to this day I have not been able to settle down and there is not one day that passes by without me thinking how much I hate being here.

Back home I have a big circle of friends, and despite complaining about my country, I never exprienced hatred towards a nation and its people until now.

Hate is a strong word, and obviously there is good and bad in all, but I used to be a happy open-minded person, but I feel like no one here is interested in getting to know me or anyone else that is not from the UK. It's like they're happy drinking alcohol a couple of times a week and discussing x-factor or any other nonsense smalltalk.

I need to finish my degree so there is no chance for me to get out of here anytime soon. How will I be able to survive another two years?

thank you for all the comments. I read my post again and felt embarassed because I sounded so harsh, it's just so...so difficult having to be in a place that makes you unhappy. Trust me, I HAVE made a great effort, joined all kinds of societies and tried to mingle with brittish people, and sure not everything has been bad for the past 3 years, but it's a downward spiral and I'm scarred of it getting a lot worse. I can't accelerate my degree nor can I complete it in Sweden due to the nature of my subject (medicine). I live in Scotland...

maybe I just need to try harder....I'm starting my 4th year of medicine soon and the stress of that does make it a lot harder to "try harder". this is so sad...I've never had to be in a position where I've activly had to FIND friends.

Don't apologise for your feelings. Actually, thank you for your post. It's hard for someone who considers themselves a nice person to come to terms with that overwhelming feeling many foreigners get while living in England. I have been here for a while and will need to stay here for a bit longer still. Like you said, there is hardly a day that passes without me dreaming about the day I will finally be able to leave. This country is empty, there is no life, there is no joy of life, the English have no understanding of what authenitc human-to-human relationship is, it's all a pretence, it's all a fake smile covering very ugly frustration and anger. I can see your post was written a few years ago, I hope you now live in some nice place

Maybe you need to look at the positive qualities that a country has. Try to look for activities that you find interesting or fun. There is no country in the world that is unlovable. There is clearly something that you are overlooking.

That's really sad. Whereabouts do you live? I'm English, and I know how unsociable and negative we can be. I hope you meet some people soon, it's really hard to make new friends here. My boyfriend moved down from the north, and even he is struggling.

That's O.K. I am from the UK and I hate Sweden and Swedish people, so we have something in common. In fact they're the only nationality that I have ever taken a strong dislike to. I have friends from Italy, Greece, France, Germany, Denmark, America, Canada, Spain, Nicaragua, Australia, Chile and Lithuania, plus many other places. - That's a hell of a lot of countries, but I have no friends from Sweden, despite meeting many from people. I cannot stand swedes, in fact I abhor them.

Hmm... I'm British and can see upsides to this country along with some DEFINATE downsides. You mention how the people you're with drink a couple of times a week and I get the impression this isn't really your thing. It's not mine either and I'm embarrassed by the amount of binge drinking that goes on in this country. It's a massive problem and it needs addressing. But we currently have a government full of privelliged toffs who don't really know how to approach social issues related to excessive drinking. That's part of the problem. Our next election is in 2015... yay.

I'm sorry you're not enjoying yourself here, but there are nice, interesting people too, honest! And we don't all like X Factor (eurgh!) If you get the chance and have the money, try exploring a couple of other areas in the UK. If you go to London, do your research first. There are some interesting places, but other parts are just full of impolite workaholics! Also, I genuinely think there's an issue of a kind of mass depression in the UK at the moment - the attitudes and tendancy to be negative about everything don't fit very well with the whole economic situation and the government are making cuts all over the place. Lastly, I hope you get to meet some more like-minded people in your remaining time here.

Erm... somehow I thought this post was newer! Sorry. So, the two years is now up and you may not even have an IIN account anymore! But if you do... how did it work out in the end?

I guess you might just be with the wrong people then...
I moved to the UK a while ago and I love it! I hate things like the X-Factor too by the way, but fortunately I'm not friends with anyone who is that obsessed with it or any other show that's kind of like it.

i agree with every word you say,i have similar situation where i cant leave the UK for another year and i hate every hour spent here, people will never want to know you if you speak with a foreign accent,-they are either ignoring you or barge in with some mean 'friendliness' and awkward questions why you here why come here why not go back to Your country and all the rest of it,displaying unbelievable amounts of arrogance and ignorance, talking crap about your nationality and laughing to their own jokes,-thats exactly how Edinburgh is,-the most racist and stuck up place in Britain.i lived there for a year and literally fled from all the abuse,i'm now in Leeds, and even after 2years i still get panic attacks when i spot the word 'Angus' or 'Scottish' in supermarket,-how sad is that?!!! i dont even know if i hate scotland,i recon i wish it never existed or i never been there or i never existed or one of those lol.Good luck,hun.Olga,27,russian.

If you live in London, you need to go East. To Hackney, especially Broadway Market. There are actually lots of Swedish people here. We don't even have TV's in our houses here because we hate TV so much, so we certainly won't be talking about X Factor!

you know, i think no matter what your age, a big move like that is hard.

two years a long time to wait for anything, but you sound like the sort who is strong enough to get through it.

are there any opportunities to accelerate any of your studies?

This is all a part of life, and growing up. I'm sorry you are not happy. Can you transfer? Having never been to the UK, I can't comment on the people. But I always assumed it was quite a diverse place.

It does sound like you are using the people as an excuse for some underlying problem. The phrase "it isn't you, it's me" didn't become a cliche for nothing.

  • It's normal. I once went to new zealand for 3 years for studying and I hated the trashy punks tthere. They have the most stupid accent and they decide to drink only to get wasted.
In my final days there I beat up somebody for fun.
stupid new zealanders, they also think they made the movie avatar.
    I hate them

you have to make the best of what you have for the next two years. do not sit there and dwell on how you hate the UK. you dont have to love it but i mean go out and experience everything you can before you leave because your going to look back at this and wish you didnt waste your time hating..

Sounds like your trying to mix with the wrong people. Depending on where you are, deep intelectual conversation is almost never found. You cant go to a random place and hope to find it. You need to know what kind of people hang out where. Know this and you will know where to make friends and hopefuly fit in.
