Is it normal that i hate the state i live in?

Ok I live in Alabama, and I hate it, people here are so closed minded it's not even real, I mean if you're not a Christian and don't agree with the conservative agenda you're pretty much an outcast, it's the same thing with sports or being smart if you don't play football or you're not an honor student no one cares about you is it normal that when I graduate from high school I want to leave this place?

I lived in Alabama AND North Carolina and I know what you mean. The part of NC that I lived in had amix of atheists and Christians but you could still get flack for either orientation and Alabama was just horrible. The worst type of Christians live there and considering that they are still that old Southern traditional, don't expect it to change any time soon.

I'm a Christian myself and even I will admit, I know exactly what and who you are talking about and THOSE are the type of people that create hatred for the south, Christianity, tradition and southern graces. Good ole' Dixieland is still naturally segregated as well, or at least it was in Salem and Birmingham. They're such good Christians yet they can't get over the idea of their children going to school with black people and the black people often feel likewise.

Don't get me wrong. I love Alabama, it will always be my home, and not everyone in Alabama is a racist, bible-thumping redneck but in some areas of Alabama, it's like they were forever sealed in the 1950's-'60s. But with IPads.

I'm currently living in North Carolina and I've been confronted by some very nasty Republicans and I have been preached to many times by Christians/Catholics about how I need to go to church and follow God. Growing up in Massachusetts, this is a very hard thing to adjust to. I can't imagine living in Alabama.

It really depends on which part of North Carolina you are in to be honest. I've gotten the same treatment however in the part I lived in, Asheville, while it was predominantly Christian, being an atheist wasn't unusual.

Ashville is a tourist town much like Charlotte so those two areas aren't as bad. I was originally in Charlotte. I moved a bit up north more and there's where it began.
I've always heard nice things about Ashville. I've wanted to visit since I got into the state.

Oh yes, very nice town. Other than that eyesore Aloft Hotel it has a very old timey feel. Nice classic stuff with a mix of old hippie and I mean that in the best way.

I found myself reading your comment before I noticed your name at the top of it and when I finished reading, I thought, "I like this person". Then I looked up, saw it was you, and thought I might as well say it anyway, even though you probably already know.

I like the person who wrote this.

This guy does not want to hear you preach. You sound just like something he is trying to avoid. Religion ain't for everyone so stop trying to shove it down our throats!

If I wanted to preach I'd do a helluva better job than that. Get over yourself. I shouldn't have even humored your idiocy with a response as it seems that you are the only person here that sees my mentioning my religion as "Preaching". I'm pretty sure that the OP is ACTUALLY trying to avoid dumb fucks like yourself. One does not need religion to be intolerably stupid. You prove the case nicely.

If you really are a christian you wouldn't be using bad words on the intrnent. Sorry but Jesus is watching you. I could say something bad but I won't. It just shows your a fake christian by using the F word.

Yes, you caught me. The bible specifically states that using the F-word is a sin. In fact, in revelations, there is a list of curse words that can not be used on the internet. Even Jesus himself proclaimed that to follow the teachings of Christ one may not use the listed curse words. You got me there, you are an amazing scholar. Thank you for not saying those bad things you enlightened individual. You must truly know what it means to be a Christian.

Oh hey, they are selling clues at Wal Mart now. You should probably go get one.

How is NeuroNeptunian preaching? Personally, I could never live in the south. The only time I ever felt religious in the south was when I'd pray to God my car didn't break down on I95 anywhere between Maryland & FLA.

Alabama's kind of a rough one politically. If I were you, I'd travel around and see the rest of the country. I'm not sure how old you are, and whether or not you're financially ready to move to another part of the US. But if you're not, then this is advice for the future; find a state that suits you. That's one of the things that I like about America. It's like having fifty miniature countries to pick and choose from.

Well you should just continue to be yourself and enjoy life as you see fit. I don't see why you must "conform" to something you don't want to be. It doesn't mean because society as a whole follows a particular way you have to follow them like blind sheep.

I also would like to say that your stereotyping quote "Ok I live in Alabama, and I hate it, people here are so closed minded" unquote just sounds hypocritical.

I'm going by the people I see everyday at school, on the street and people outside the hospitals protesting because some woman is getting an abortion and they are very closed minded, don't say i'm stereotyping when you more than likely have never been here. Come and stay here for about a month and I guarantee you you will want to leave as soon as you can.

Still, it doesn't mean the entire state is filled with only these type of people. You just need to let them be and just live life.

In all fairness, I don't think there's one single abortion provider who is free from protesters in their vicinity. That's just normal.

If you go near Times Square in NYC there's protesters who get right in your face with grotesque pics of aborted fetuses and they're CRAZY!!

I didn't really see that the last time I was in the south. There are towns that are decidedly fundamentalist but the bigger cities have more uhhh... of a tolerant attitude.

I hate admitting it because I am a Southerner and I love my home and miss it dearly but in some areas, the kind of stigmas that are fading in more liberal areas (being an unwed mother, being gay etc.) Are still noticeable. And the more aggressive people get towards them regarding their beliefs the stronger they hold them.

See, I don't know how to see the whole thing....it IS confusing....Depending on your religion (or lack of) and race, it seems it's still pretty weird!!

Yeah, it is. It's worse in towns with relatively no newcomers. They're fairly isolated from society in a sense until the past few years since internet took off.

In parts of the south, however, the dominant race is African American (Perry County Alabama for one) but the areas like that are often so impoverished and nasty that no one or company wants to go there.

That's normal. It might now even be the whole state. I remember I lived in a very small city, and everybody was obsessed petty things such as designer clothes and appearance. They were also very close minded too. However, when I moved into my college that was 40 minutes away, it was like the whole atmosphere changed. Most people were very intelligent and open minded.
I think colleges and big cities such as NYC have more open minded people.

I moved from a Northern state to a few different Southern states, and there is a big difference. In the deep South (GA, NC), I noticed more racism than religion. Both were prevalent but racism seemed so 'current', as if it was new, fresh and scary. Then states like TX and OK are so Christian and racism is not really a big deal, but discrimination against non-Christian people is extreme.

In the very late 90's I was in GA and I was walking to the corner store and a black guy approached me and he seemed petrified to be talking to me, then the first thing he asked was 'do you date black guys?'. He was all worried that my dad or brothers were in the Klan or something and he'd get in trouble just for talking to me. That was just WEIRD!! Being from NY that was just so foreign and sad to me that people were afraid to talk to someone of a different race! The churches in the deep South seem to be segregated too. That's not so in the 'other' South like TX, OK. They care more that you're a Christian over your race there. Whenever I'd meet anybody there, the first thing they'd always ask was 'what church do you go to?'...no lie, before you said your name sometimes, that's what they'd be asking. In some places if you didn't go to church you'd have trouble finding a job.

It is extreme, I know what you mean.
