Is it normal that i hate the sound of people eating?

When I hear my family eat, they make noises and they might think they're subtle but they're so obvious and they disturb me so much! I am disturbed when I notice myself eating too but it's more noticeable when other people are doing it, especially my mom who almost seems to deliberately smack her lips when she eats and it pisses me off so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't know why this makes me so upset but it does! It's the same disgusted, angry feeling you get hearing your parents have sex, except while you're trying to eat and everyone is doing it.

There's nothing quite as disgusting as eating with people who eat with their mouth open.
Were the people who eat like that raised by dogs? Isn't it just common sense, if for no other reason, to keep the food in their mouth while chewing?

Wow! This is the first time I've heard of anything that describes exactly how I feel although I've never hurt anyone physically over it even though I've wanted to throw knives. My family has forced me to just put up with it since it's illogical to expect people to change but I do have to leave the room sometimes if my mom is chomping in that deliberate determined way that makes me want to throw her plate out the the window. It helps that the TV is usually on during dinner and that there's generally a lot of background noise. The most frustrating part is how no one understands that even though I know I make noises, it still bothers me and I know it's irrational and people think you're just being a jerk. Is this at all related to being overly sensitive to noise in general? I get headaches everyday from loud people at school who totally okay with how loud they're being and I don't know how they can stand it without getting headaches too. Girls shrieking and laughing is the most painful. It's so acute and it feels like jabbing in my ears.

it's that bad, i know. i used to sleep with music on because from my room i could hear silverware hitting the plates and that drove me insane because i could imagine the sounds being made. now imagine when i was with them. i have no problem with other sounds with the exception of people biting their nails. ugh

Did anyone else think of Bill Murray in 'What About Bob'?

I can't stand it either; great thing my fifth meal of the day doesn't conflict with their dinner hour.

Speaking of which, one time I was in the library and a girl was using the computer next to mine. I don't know if there was something wrong with her mouth, but she was making a strange slurping sound. It's the kind of sound you would make if you're trying to prevent spit coming out from your mouth. I wanted someone to rip my ears off.

Ugh I feel the same way :/ My parents chew with mouths open and also make sorta grunting noises when the food is tasty. And to not mention when they chew and talk at the same time >.<

Alright, either grow up or eat outside, fucking pansies. You can't zone out a simple sound then that's about the most you deserve. I hate when people do this. They throw absolute fits when you're trying to enjoy your meal and when you eat all self conscious and shit with your mouth shut they shoot evil eyes at you all through the meal as if you just shat in their bed. That or they put their food off and march off all spoilt. Bloody children. Get over it.

that's not how it works. it's a common psychological disorder and the people who suffer from it have no control over how they feel about certain sounds and are taken by anger, hate, disgust, etc

Yes and my solution? Eat outside. I'll be damned if someone ruins my meal because they can't 'handle the way it sounds'. Believe it or not there's only so much a person can do to mute the sound of the natural behavior of processing food.

surely my intention was never to ruin anyone's meal. i learned to protect myself by not being around. buuut with a partner it's a whole diff story, if they can't respect it i can't stay with them. like you said, eat outside. outside of my fucking house, bitch!

What are your ideas of the worst foods when people eat? Mine: raw carrots, potato chips, and really crunchy snacks like Corn Nuts.

Or people who take that first bite of chip with their mouth open, then continue to chew with their mouth closed. It's like "CRACK!! Crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch". I hate that!! Close your damn lips around the chip as you take a bite. Or pop the entire thing in, but CLOSE YOUR MOUTH.

it's so totally weird how this is such a common problem, exactly the way you described it. I've been experiencing the same thing since I was 10 (the typical onset age) and more toward my parents and some other people who are close to me...but mostly my parents.

You mention the feeling being similar to hearing your parents have sex. It's funny you say that, because I made a connection awhile back that it might have stemmed from that. My parents always *****d VERY loudly as I was growing up, and I can't tell you how many horrible things I had to listen to as a very young child and into adolescence. I thought that that might have triggered the way I felt about them chewing.

The two worst things are hearing another person eat and breathe really heavy. Both of those things make want to punch said person in the face with a brick, truthfully.

I much prefer the sounds made when people put food into their bodies rather than the sounds made when it comes out.

Yeah, the squishy chewing sound is a bit gross. I don't mind a hard SNAP, but a mushy sound is really eurghghg.
