Is it normal that i hate the how are you question

I dont like when people ask me how im doing because I'm the type of person I can feel 2 or more emotions (or what have you) at the same time. and I think it's a boring question.
when people ask me I always just say I'm fine. once I hear it I no longer want to even have a conversation.
(I dont mean with strangers in passing)
it's just a generic question but it's so annoying to me.
it's not a conversation starter.... ex:
how are you ?
Good, and you?
I'm fine.
awkward silence
is this normal or am I just being a bitch?

"How are you" isn't supposed to be a conversation starter. For most folks it's the same as saying "hello". And saying "fine" is the correct answer no matter how you actualy are. It's part of being polite. When we meet we say "hello" to each other to acknowledge each others existence more than for any other reason. "how are you" means that we care. Small talk means we want to share with and entertain each other. It's somewhat insincere sometimes, which is probably why you get annoyed.
Don't take it so hard. This is not the only weird thing that people say and do.

It is more of a casual greeting people say to kind of break the ice. If shit like this bugs you then i dont want to know what other kinds of trivial things do too.

If it's from a cashier or something, it's a formality.

Are you seriously saying you think your friends and family don't actually mean it when they ask it?

I assumed everyone meant it when they asked friends and family. I do. And I do want to hear their actual answer.

    I agree, it seems disingenuous.
